Synergistic effect of ligating and ionic functions, prearranged on a calix[4]arene.

2006

The covalent attachment of two CMPO-functions and two anionic Cosan groups to the narrow rim of tert-butylcalix[4]arene leads to a dramatic increase of the extraction efficiency for the cone isomer; Am(3+) is removed from 5 x 10(-8) M solution to more than 99% by a single extraction step with a 3 x 10(-6) M solution of the calixarene.

Extraction of lanthanides and actinides by a magnetically assisted chemical separation technique based on CMPO-calix[4]arenes

2001

A novel particulate system carrying CMPO ligands pre-organised on a calixarene scaffold has been synthesised and demonstrated to extract Eu3+, Am3+ and Ce3+ at high efficiency from simulated nuclear waste streams.

The acidity of calix[5]arenes and their linear analogues

1999

Abstract Five new calix[5]arenes containing a single p-nitrophenol unit as the most acidic phenolic unit have been synthesised by (3+2) fragment condensation of a trimer with a p-nitrophenol in the middle with various bishydroxymethylated alkanediyl diphenols. Their first acid constant (pKal) has been determined in 2-methoxyethanol/water (9:1) at 22°C by optical titration. The pKal values are distinctly lower (ΔpKa > 2) than for the trimer, while no difference has been found in comparison to structurally analogous calix[4]arenes. Rigidification of the calix[5]arene skeleton by introducing a single alkanediyl bridge opposite to the p-nitrophenol unit has no effect on pKal. All values are in …

Hydrogen-Bonding Effects in Calix[4]arene Capsules

2000

The synthesis and spectroscopic characterization of self-assembling calix[4]arene based capsules 1a.1a and 1b.1b are described. These compounds feature four urea substituents at the upper rims and four secondary amide fragments at the lower rims that can participate in inter- and intramolecular hydrogen bonding in apolar solution. Communication between the calixarene rims in 1a, b influences the self-assembled cavity's size and shape. Specifically. dimerization results in a perfect cone conformation of the calixarene skeleton in 1a, b and stabilizes a seam of intramolecular amide C=O...H-N hydrogen bonds at the lower rim. This seam is cycloenantiomeric, with either clockwise or counterclock…
