Automatic recognition of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep by artificial neural networks.

Artificial neural networks are well known for their good performance in pattern recognition. Their suitability for detecting REM sleep periods on the basis of preprocessed EEG data in humans under clinical conditions was tested and their performance compared with the manual evaluation. A single channel of the EEG signal was analysed in time periods of 20 s and preprocessed into a vector of six real numbers, which served as input to the network. EOG and EMG information was ignored. Backpropagation was used as a learning rule for the network, which consisted of 12 neurons and 39 synapses. Apnea detection using cardiac rhythm and its hardware implementation

Abstract Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder characterized by pauses in breathing during sleep. Its detection is very important to avoid important disorders in the patients such as daytime fatigue and sleepiness, which might be very dangerous in certain work places. One of the methods to detect apnea is based in the cardiac rhythm, measuring some parameters which indicate the presence of respiration abnormalities. This work describes the used algorithm to detect apnea and its hardware implementation in an FPGA device for real time detection using the electrocardiogram (ECG) signal.

One of the aims of the SIESTA project was to establish a normative database of sleep parameters for healthy and sleep-disturbed patients. Reference data for sleep parameters in non-sleep-disturbed subjects are scarce and usually refer to means and standard deviations. However, since most of the parameters do not follow a Gaussian distribution, percentiles of the distribution provide more detailed information. The present results are based on data from 198 healthy, non-sleep-disturbed subjects (104 females) in the age range of 20 to 95 years. Intrinsically disordered protein PID-2 modulates Z granules and is required for heritable piRNA-induced silencing in the Caenorhabditis elegans embryo

Abstract In Caenorhabditis elegans, the piRNA (21U RNA) pathway is required to establish proper gene regulation and an immortal germline. To achieve this, PRG‐1‐bound 21U RNAs trigger silencing mechanisms mediated by RNA‐dependent RNA polymerase (RdRP)‐synthetized 22G RNAs. This silencing can become PRG‐1‐independent and heritable over many generations, a state termed RNA‐induced epigenetic gene silencing (RNAe). AbstractThe approximation of Banach space valued non-absolutely integrable functions by step functions is studied. It is proved that a Henstock integrable function can be approximated by a sequence of step functions in the Alexiewicz norm, while a Henstock–Kurzweil–Pettis and a Denjoy–Khintchine–Pettis integrable function can be only scalarly approximated in the Alexiewicz norm by a sequence of step functions. In case of Henstock–Kurzweil–Pettis and Denjoy–Khintchine–Pettis integrals the full approximation can be done if and only if the range of the integral is norm relatively compact.

Two studies are reported which investigate the relationship between sex-role orientation and memory for gender-related terms. Based on the concept of ‘cognitive schema’, theoretical models have recently been advanced suggesting that the schematic cognitive representation of gender facilitates the recall of words pertinent to gender.
