Application of the theory of naturally curved and twisted bars to designing Gorlov's helical turbine 1. System of governing equations
1998
The method of designing a new type of turbine used in flows of various kinds is discussed. Static, kinematic, and constitutive equations for transversely isotropic naturally curved and twisted bars are given, and the hypotheses used are discussed. The statement of the problem is linear and corresponds to small displacements. A method for solving the statically indeterminate problem is proposed. The objectives of numerical calculations, which will comprise the content of the second part of the investigation, are formulated.
Probabilistic analysis of truss structures with uncertain parameters (virtual distortion method approach)
2004
A new approach for probabilistic characterization of linear elastic redundant trusses with uncertainty on the various members subjected to deterministic loads acting on the nodes of the structure is presented. The method is based on the simple observation that variations of structural parameters are equivalent to superimposed strains on a reference structure depending on the axial forces on the elastic modulus of the original structure as well as on the uncertainty (virtual distortion method approach). Superposition principle may be applied to separate contribution to mechanical response due to external loads and parameter variations. Statically determinate trusses dealt with the proposed m…
Exploring topics in LDA models through Statistically Validated Networks: directed and undirected approaches
2022
Probabilistic topic models are machine learning tools for processing and understanding large text document collections. Among the different models in the literature, Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) has turned out to be the benchmark of the topic modelling community. The key idea is to represent text documents as random mixtures over latent semantic structures called topics. Each topic follows a multinomial distribution over the vocabulary words. In order to understand the result of a topic model, researchers usually select the top-n (essential words) words with the highest probability given a topic and look for meaningful and interpretable semantic themes. This work proposes a new method …
Ranking coherence in topic models using statistically validated networks
2023
Probabilistic topic models have become one of the most widespread machine learning techniques in textual analysis. Topic discovering is an unsupervised process that does not guarantee the interpretability of its output. Hence, the automatic evaluation of topic coherence has attracted the interest of many researchers over the last decade, and it is an open research area. This article offers a new quality evaluation method based on statistically validated networks (SVNs). The proposed probabilistic approach consists of representing each topic as a weighted network of its most probable words. The presence of a link between each pair of words is assessed by statistically validating their co-oc…
High-frequency trading and networked markets
2021
Financial markets have undergone a deep reorganization during the last 20 y. A mixture of technological innovation and regulatory constraints has promoted the diffusion of market fragmentation and high-frequency trading. The new stock market has changed the traditional ecology of market participants and market professionals, and financial markets have evolved into complex sociotechnical institutions characterized by a great heterogeneity in the time scales of market members’ interactions that cover more than eight orders of magnitude. We analyze three different datasets for two highly studied market venues recorded in 2004 to 2006, 2010 to 2011, and 2018. Using methods of complex network th…
Asymptotic optimality of myopic information-based strategies for Bayesian adaptive estimation
2016
This paper presents a general asymptotic theory of sequential Bayesian estimation giving results for the strongest, almost sure convergence. We show that under certain smoothness conditions on the probability model, the greedy information gain maximization algorithm for adaptive Bayesian estimation is asymptotically optimal in the sense that the determinant of the posterior covariance in a certain neighborhood of the true parameter value is asymptotically minimal. Using this result, we also obtain an asymptotic expression for the posterior entropy based on a novel definition of almost sure convergence on "most trials" (meaning that the convergence holds on a fraction of trials that converge…
A Unified Approach to Likelihood Inference on Stochastic Orderings in a Nonparametric Context
1998
Abstract For data in a two-way contingency table with ordered margins, we consider various hypotheses of stochastic orders among the conditional distributions considered by rows and show that each is equivalent to requiring that an invertible transformation of the vectors of conditional row probabilities satisfies an appropriate set of linear inequalities. This leads to the construction of a general algorithm for maximum likelihood estimation under multinomial sampling and provides a simple framework for deriving the asymptotic distribution of log-likelihood ratio tests. The usual stochastic ordering and the so called uniform and likelihood ratio orderings are considered as special cases. I…
Uniform measure density condition and game regularity for tug-of-war games
2018
We show that a uniform measure density condition implies game regularity for all 2 < p < ∞ in a stochastic game called “tug-of-war with noise”. The proof utilizes suitable choices of strategies combined with estimates for the associated stopping times and density estimates for the sum of independent and identically distributed random vectors. peerReviewed
Affine-invariant rank tests for multivariate independence in independent component models
2016
We consider the problem of testing for multivariate independence in independent component (IC) models. Under a symmetry assumption, we develop parametric and nonparametric (signed-rank) tests. Unlike in independent component analysis (ICA), we allow for the singular cases involving more than one Gaussian independent component. The proposed rank tests are based on componentwise signed ranks, à la Puri and Sen. Unlike the Puri and Sen tests, however, our tests (i) are affine-invariant and (ii) are, for adequately chosen scores, locally and asymptotically optimal (in the Le Cam sense) at prespecified densities. Asymptotic local powers and asymptotic relative efficiencies with respect to Wilks’…
