P3‐039: Axonal neuritic pathology induces early presynaptic alterations in ps1/APP Alzheimer's mice hippocampus

2011

Loss of neurons in the hippocampus correlates with memory impairment in AD. Significant early reduction in the numerical density of hippocampal SOM interneurons was found in single (APPswe) and double (APPswe/ PS1dE9 and APPswe/TauP301S-G272V) transgenic models based on APP over expression and amyloid production. However, this inhibitory population was unaffected in age-matched single PS1 and tau transgenic mice as well as nontransgenic controls. Whereas SOM neuron loss in APPswe/PS1dE9 was associated to the onset of extracellular amyloid pathology in double APP/ tau mice this loss preceded plaque formation. Conclusions: As in human AD, somatostatin cell loss is a common early pathological …

Transient oligemia is associated with long-term changes in binding densities of cortical inhibitory GABAA receptors in the rat brain

2009

Recently, we could demonstrate in rats that a short transient oligemic period of only 20-minute duration, induced by systemic hypotension, resulted in a transient decline of spatial memory capacities without any histological damage over a subsequent period of 6 months. In our present study, we checked for more subtle alterations within the highly vulnerable hippocampal CA1 subfield using quantification of neuronal cell density and semi-quantitative analysis of the ischemia-sensitive protein MAP2. Since hippocampal excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitter receptors are crucially involved in spatial memory processes, quantitative in vitro receptor autoradiography was performed using [(3)H]M…

Stimulatory and inhibitory effects of ethanol on hippocampal acetylcholine release

1998

Using the microdialysis technique and sensitive HPLC procedures for the determination of acetylcholine (ACh) and ethanol, we investigated the release of ACh in rat hippocampus after acute ethanol administration. Systemic administration of ethanol (0.8 and 2.4 g/kg i.p.) led to peak ethanol concentrations of 21 and 42 mM in the hippocampus, respectively. The high dose caused a long-lasting inhibition of basal ACh release by up to 33%. Local infusion of scopolamine (1 microM) enhanced hippocampal ACh release up to eightfold in the presence of neostigmine (10 microM), and this stimulated release was also inhibited after systemic ethanol administration (by up to 45%). The low dose of ethanol (0…

Macrophage migration inhibitory factor is critically involved in basal and fluoxetine-stimulated adult hippocampal cell proliferation and in anxiety,…

2011

Intensive research is devoted to unravel the neurobiological mechanisms mediating adult hippocampal neurogenesis, its regulation by antidepressants, and its behavioral consequences. Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is a pro-inflammatory cytokine that is expressed in the CNS, where its function is unknown. Here, we show, for the first time, the relevance of MIF expression for adult hippocampal neurogenesis. We identify MIF expression in neurogenic cells (in stem cells, cells undergoing proliferation, and in newly proliferated cells undergoing maturation) in the subgranular zone of the rodent dentate gyrus. A causal function for MIF in cell proliferation was shown using genetic (M…

A study of international work camp volunteers' attitudes and experiences of English as a lingua franca

2014

Yhä useammalla nuorella aikuisella on omakohtaisia kokemuksia englannin kielen käytöstä monikulttuurisessa ympäristössä, esimerkiksi vaihto-opiskelun tai vapaaehtoistyön kautta. Kyseisissä tilanteissa puhuttu englanti poikkeaa monin tavoin oppitunneilla opituista ja natiivien käyttämästä englannista. Tutkielman aiheena on selvittää, kuinka Suomessa vuonna 2012 järjestetyille vapaaehtoistyöleireille osallistuneet nuoret kokivat englannin kielen käytön leireillä ja millaisia asenteita heillä on englannin kieltä kohtaan. Tavoitteena on selvittää, kuinka he asennoituvat omaan ja toistensa kielenkäyttöön, aksenttiin, natiivien kanssa viestintään, mukauttamiseen ja koodinvaihtoon ja millaisia kei…

Fabrication of graphene ruthenium-complex heterostructures

2015

The aim of this study is to understand the photoresponse of a Ruthenium-complex/graphene heterostructure. Early work demonstrated that light detection by graphene field effect devices was enhanced by dropcasting Ruthenium Complex molecules. Here we proposed to fabricate a new class of devices where the Ruthenium-complex molecules are embedded between two layer of CVD monolayer graphene.

Harmonic generation in all-dielectric metasurfaces

2023

Nonlinear light generation is a key phenomenon in many optical systems. Recently, the field of nonlinear optics has moved to the miniaturization of conventional bulky components. Among all the new platforms that have been proposed, dielectric nanoscale resonators represent excellent candidates for light generation and manipulation. When arranged in periodic arrays, such high refractive index scattering components become an artificial material called metasurface. Several approaches for designing platforms with enhanced optical nonlinearities at moderate pump intensities have been proposed. In this chapter, we review the most recent results on second- and third-order nonlinear processes in hi…
