Alzheimer’s disease is affecting people with increasing frequency, since there is a clear relationship between the incidence of this detrimental disorder and age. Scalable Electro-Optic Control of Localized Bistable Switching in Broad-Area VCSELs Using Reconfigurable Funnel Waveguides

We demonstrate a steplike optical modulation based on the activation and deactivation of a bistable localized structure using a photoinduced and reconfigurable miniaturized 30 × 30 μm electroactivated funnel waveguide. Control of a single 10-μm-diameter spot in a 200-μm-diameter vertical-cavity surfaceemitting laser at 980 nm is achieved modulating the phase of an exciting beam in the specific position of the spot in the cavity. This localized on-off response can be scaled into arrays and offer a possible route to fast integrated optical logical functions and memory at low intensities at near-infrared wavelengths.
First observations of the fumarolic gas output from a restless caldera: Implications for the current period of unrest (2005-2013) at Campi Flegrei

The fumarolic gas output has not been quantified for any of the currently deforming calderas worldwide, due to the lack of suitable gas flux sensing techniques. In view of resumption of ground uplift (since 2005) and the associated variations in gas chemistry, Campi Flegrei, in southern Italy, is one of the restless calderas where gas flux observations are especially necessary. Here we report the first ever obtained estimate of the Campi Flegrei fumarolic gas output, based on a set of MultiGAS surveys (performed in 2012 and 2013) with an ad-hoc-designed measurement setup. The 8th Augustan Legion was installed at Mirebeau-sur-Bèze (Côte-d'Or) after 70 AD following the troubles that arose with the Lingons. It remained there until the time of Domitian, a period of roughly twenty years, during which time the soldiers produced tiles stamped with the name of the legion. Analysis of the dispersion of the tiles in the region around Mirebeau shows that they followed the communication routes. Consideration of the contexts in which these tiles were used, their number on each site and the resources necessary to manufacture them reveals that the 8th Legion may have played a significant role in the diffusion and adoption of tiled roofs, a construction technique that was t…
