Minireview: Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors on Hippocampal Neurons: Distribution on the Neuronal Surface and Modulation of Receptor Activity
1997
The recent development of a technique that uses infrared microscopy for the visualization of well-defined areas on the surface of neurons, and a computerized system of micromanipulators led to the discovery that functional nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) are expressed at higher density on the dendrites than on the soma of rat hippocampal neurons. The finding that the expression of alpha-bungarotoxin-sensitive, alpha 7-bearing, nAChRs and dihydro-beta-erythroidine-sensitive, alpha 4 beta 2 nAChRs tends to increase along the dendritic length suggests that these receptors may be highly involved in the integration of synaptic functions in hippocampal neurons. The present report also …
Antidepressants are functional antagonists at the serotonin type 3 (5-HT3) receptor
2003
Antidepressants are commonly supposed to enhance serotonergic and/or noradrenergic neurotransmission by inhibition of neurotransmitter reuptake through binding to the respective neurotransmitter transporters or through inhibition of the monoamine oxidase. Using the concentration-clamp technique and measurements of intracellular Ca2+, we demonstrate that different classes of antidepressants act as functional antagonists at the human 5-HT3A receptor stably expressed in HEK 293 cells and at endogenous 5-HT3 receptors of rat hippocampal neurons and N1E-115 neuroblastoma cells. The tricyclic antidepressants desipramine, imipramine, and trimipramine, the serotonin reuptake inhibitor fluoxetine, t…
Uno Smart Campus per UniPA
2017
The role of neurosteoids sulphate in a spatial and object recognition learning task
2012
The term “neuroactive steroid” refers to steroids that have rapid modulatory effects on ligand-gated ion channels via non-genomic mechanism. Specifically, neurosteroids can alter neuronal excitability via the cell surface interacting with specific neurotransmitter receptors. The neurosteroid pregnenolone sulphate (PREGS) has been described as negative modulator of GABAA receptor and positive modulator of NMDA receptor, affecting cognition as well as emotionality. The present study was aimed to assess the effects of the acute administration of PREGS (10 mg/Kg, s. c.) on rats cognitive functions using a novel task, the Can test. This task explores, under reinforcement, the spatial/visual cues…

Campus Asia “Cinema Paradise” 2021. “Above the clouds”: Un progetto temporaneo per la Valle di Bolognetta
2021
In the frame of the international winter school organized by Campus Asia, the Valley of Bolognetta has been chosen by the LabCity Architecture group as the official site for an architectural competition. On the 30th anniversary of the Academy Award to Maestro Giuseppe Tornatore, Campus Asia promoted “Cinema Paradise” as main theme to design an architectural project that is envisioned as strictly connected to the people and to the environment. The project “Above the cloud”, presented by LabCity Architecture Team from the University of Palermo, joins nature and architecture through the design of a performative event.
Fostering the energy efficiency through the energy savings: The case of the University of Palermo
2019
This paper reports the strategy implemented by the Palermo University (Italy) aimed at fostering the energy performance of its campus, particularly towards financing energy saving measures. The basic idea is that the money saved through the energy efficiency actions, constitute the main flywheel to fund further savings and energy efficiency interventions. Results of this paper might bring a useful contribution to the energy planning of cities, since campuses may be regarded as emblematic case study of what can be done in cities because they reproduce, at a little scale, the functioning of wider urban contexts.
Human Mobility Simulator for Smart Applications
2019
Several issues related to Smart City development require the knowledge of accurate human mobility models, such as in the case of urban development planning or evacuation strategy definition. Nevertheless, the exploitation of real data about users' mobility results in severe threats to their privacy, since it allows to infer highly sensitive information. On the contrary, the adoption of simulation tools to handle mobility models allows to neglect privacy during the design of location-based services. In this work, we propose a simulation tool capable of generating synthetic datasets of human mobility traces; then, we exploit them to evaluate the effectiveness of algorithms which aim to detect…
WiP: Smart services for an augmented campus
2018
Technological progress in recent years has allowed the design of new intelligent learning systems in smart environments aiming to facilitate users' lives. As a consequence, besides making use of traditional sensors for monitoring the quantities of interest, such systems can also benefit from information obtained from the users' smart devices, which can now be considered as additional sensing tools. In this article, we present the design of a novel system based on the fog computing paradigm that can improve the services offered to users on a smart campus by using different smart devices, i.e., smartphones, smartwatches, tablets, smartcameras and so on. In particular, we will describe a syste…
