Targeting breast cancer initiating cells: advances in breast cancer research and therapy

Over the past 10 years there have been significant advances in our understanding of breast cancer and the important roles that breast cancer initiating cells (CICs) play in the development and resistance of breast cancer. Breast CICs endowed with self-renewing and tumor-initiating capacities are believed to be responsible for the relapses which often occur after various breast cancer therapies. The biological actions of estrogens require their interaction with two estrogen receptors (ER-alpha and ER-beta), which are ligand-dependent transcription factors. Tumorigenic and metastatic activity of human thyroid cancer stem cells

Abstract Thyroid carcinoma is the most common endocrine malignancy and the first cause of death among endocrine cancers. We show that the tumorigenic capacity in thyroid cancer is confined in a small subpopulation of stem-like cells with high aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDHhigh) activity and unlimited replication potential.
