Comparison of paediatric cancers outcomes between Palermo Province (Sicily) and Southern Europe

2018

Background: Italy has one of the highest paediatric cancer incidence rate in Europe. We compared cancer incidence and survival in children (0-14 years) and adolescents (15-19 years) resident in Palermo Province with statistics derived from Italian and European surveillance systems. Methods: We included all incident cancer cases, malignant tumours and non-malignant neoplasm of central nervous system (benign and uncertain whether malignant or benign), detected in children and adolescents by the Palermo Province Cancer Registry between 2003 and 2012. A joinpoint regression model was applied. Annual Average Percentage Changes were calculated. The Besag–York–Mollie model was used to detect any c…

Immunoscore in Mismatch Repair-Proficient and -Deficient Colon Cancer

2017

Abstract The aim of this study was to investigate immune response and its prognostic significance in colon carcinomas using the previously described Immunoscore (IS). A population-based series of 779 colorectal cancers, operated on between 2000 and 2010, were classified according to tumour, node, metastasis (TNM) status, mismatch repair (MMR), and BRAF mutation status. Rectal cancer cases (n = 203) were excluded as a high proportion of these patients received preoperative neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy. Tissue microarray (TMA) samples collected from the tumour centre and invasive front were immunostained for CD3 and CD8. Lymphocytes were then digitally calculated to categorize IS from grade …

Tworzenie kompleksów inkluzyjnych pomiędzy 5-fluorouracylem a β-cyklodekstrynami

2017

Wykazano istnienie przynajmniej jednego wiązania wodorowego pomiędzy grupą aminową 5FU, a grupą hydroksylową powie…

Inter- and Intraobserver Variation in the Assessment of Preoperative Colostograms in Male Anorectal Malformations: An ARM-Net Consortium Survey

2020

Aim:Male patients with anorectal malformations (ARM) are classified according to presence and level of the recto-urinary fistula. This is traditionally established by a preoperative high-pressure distal colostogram that may be variably interpreted by different surgeons. The aim of this study was to evaluate the inter- and intraobserver variation in the assessment by pediatric surgeons of preoperative colostograms with respect to the level of the recto-urinary fistula. Materials and Methods:Sixteen pediatric surgeons from 14 European centers belonging to the ARM-Net Consortium twice scored 130 images of distal colostograms taken in sagittal projection at a median age of 66 days of life (rang…

Body Weight, Physical Activity, and Risk of Cancer in Lynch Syndrome

2021

Simple Summary Lifestyle modifies cancer risk in the general public. How lifestyle modifies cancer risk in individuals carrying the inherited pathogenic gene variants in DNA mismatch repair genes (Lynch syndrome) remains understudied. We conducted a retrospective study with cancer register data to investigate associations between body weight, physical activity, and cancer risk among Finnish Lynch syndrome carriers (n = 465, 54% women). The results of our study indicated that longitudinal weight gain increases cancer risk, whereas being highly physically active during adulthood could decrease cancer risk in men. Further, women were observed to be less prone to lifestyle-related risk factors …

Tumori femminili: gli script emozionali del proprio sé corporeo in relazione all’iter terapeutico e alle rappresentazioni del dominio maschile

2015

This text provides on reflection on the effects of experience of female cancer in the emotional sphere and in the gender relations of 36 women of South Italy. The research aimed discussing the role of medicine as a social practice that imposes the domination of traditional representations in which female beauty is equivalent to the physical integrity and full functioning of specific attributes sexed (uterus and breast). It is an analysis particularly focusing on the transformations of perception of body as Körper and the emotions which, cross-sectionally, constitutes the self-perception of Leib. The survey describes how language of medicine and power of male representations performs the sub…

Hyperspectral imaging system in the delineation of Ill-defined basal cell carcinomas : a pilot study

2019

Background Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common skin cancer in the Caucasian population. Eighty per cent of BCCs are located on the head and neck area. Clinically ill‐defined BCCs often represent histologically aggressive subtypes, and they can have subtle subclinical extensions leading to recurrence and the need for re‐excisions. Objectives The aim of this pilot study was to test the feasibility of a hyperspectral imaging system (HIS) in vivo in delineating the preoperatively lateral margins of ill‐defined BCCs on the head and neck area. Methods Ill‐defined BCCs were assessed clinically with a dermatoscope, photographed and imaged with HIS. This was followed by surgical procedures…

Colorectal cancer incidences in Lynch syndrome: a comparison of results from the prospective lynch syndrome database and the international mismatch r…

2022

Abstract Objective To compare colorectal cancer (CRC) incidences in carriers of pathogenic variants of the MMR genes in the PLSD and IMRC cohorts, of which only the former included mandatory colonoscopy surveillance for all participants. Methods CRC incidences were calculated in an intervention group comprising a cohort of confirmed carriers of pathogenic or likely pathogenic variants in mismatch repair genes (path_MMR) followed prospectively by the Prospective Lynch Syndrome Database (PLSD). All had colonoscopy surveillance, with polypectomy when polyps were identified. Comparison was made with a retrospective cohort reported by the International Mismatch Repair Consortium (IMRC). This com…

Survival by colon cancer stage and screening interval in Lynch syndrome:a prospective Lynch syndrome database report

2019

Abstract Background We previously reported that in pathogenic mismatch repair (path_MMR) variant carriers, the incidence of colorectal cancer (CRC) was not reduced when colonoscopy was undertaken more frequently than once every 3 years, and that CRC stage and interval since last colonoscopy were not correlated. Methods The Prospective Lynch Syndrome Database (PLSD) that records outcomes of surveillance was examined to determine survival after colon cancer in relation to the time since previous colonoscopy and pathological stage. Only path_MMR variants scored by the InSiGHT variant database as class 4 or 5 (clinically actionable) were included in the analysis. Results Ninety-nine path_MMR ca…

Hazardous air pollutants and primary liver cancer in Texas.

2016

The incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the most common primary liver cancer, is increasing in the US and tripled during the past two decades. The reasons for such phenomenon remain poorly understood. Texas is among continental states with the highest incidence of liver cancer with an annual increment of 5.7%. Established risk factors for HCC include Hepatitis B and C (HBV, HCV) viral infection, alcohol, tobacco and suspected risk factors include obesity and diabetes. While distribution of these risk factors in the state of Texas is similar to the national data and homogeneous, the incidence of HCC in this state is exceptionally higher than the national average and appears to be di…
