Evaluation of the immunogenicity and reactogenicity of a DTPa-HBV-IPV combination vaccine Co-administered with a hib conjugate vaccine either as a si…

2004

A combined DTPa-HBV-IPV/Hib vaccine containing diphtheria (D), tetanus (T), acellular pertussis (Pa), hepatitis B (HBV) and types 1, 2 and 3 inactivated polioviruses (IPV) extemporaneously mixed with a conjugated Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) vaccine (Group 1) was compared to the DTPa-HBV-IPV and Hib vaccines (Group 2) administered separately at 3, 5 and 11 months of age (n = 440). A microneutralization assay was used to detect antibodies against the 3 polio virus types (cut-off 1:8 dil), RIA for anti-HBs antibodies (cut-off 10 mIU/ml) and ELISA for antibodies against all other vaccine antigens (cut-off: 0.1 IU/ml for anti-tetanus and anti-diphtheria antibodies; 5 El.U/ml for antibodi…

Evolution of brain abscess in cats formation of capsule and resolution of brain edema

1980

Brain abscess evolution was studied in an experimental model in the cat correlating the computed tomographic scan appearance with intracranial pressure, brain edema and histopathological findings. Brain inflammation was produced by direct inoculation of Staphylococcus aureus into the white matter. Abscesses developed in all animals. The ring enhancement around the necrotic focus seen at an early stage after contrast-medium injection cannot be equated with capsule formation as long as the abscess diameter increased. Parallel to the acute stage of abscess, the intraventricular pressure increased due to the rising mass effect and the spreading edma. The morphological investigations revealed on…

Surgical management of pleomorphic adenoma of parotid gland in elderly patients: Role of morphological features

2014

AbstractThe neoplasms of the salivary glands account for 2% of head and neck tumors and the most common form is the Pleomorphic adenoma (PA). Parotid gland is affected from 80% to 90% of cases. In elderly these tumors occur mostly in females. These benign tumors are composed of epithelial and myoepithelial cells that are arranged with various morphological patterns and subtypes. The classification of these tumors is also based on the amount and nature of the stroma. In literature there is an almost complete consensus that, in the major salivary glands, PAs are enclosed by a layer of fibrous tissue often called “capsule” but there is disagreement about the form, extension and thickness of th…

The effect of the pro-inflammatory cytokine tumor necrosis factor-alpha on human joint capsule myofibroblasts.

2009

Introduction Previous studies have shown that the number of myoblastically differentiated fibroblasts known as myofibroblasts (MFs) is significantly increased in stiff joint capsules, indicating their crucial role in the pathogenesis of post-traumatic joint stiffness. Although the mode of MFs' function has been well defined for different diseases associated with tissue fibrosis, the underlying mechanisms of their regulation in the pathogenesis of post-traumatic joint capsule contracture are largely unknown. Methods In this study, we examined the impact of the pro-inflammatory cytokine tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) on cellular functions of human joint capsule MFs. MFs were challenged w…

Disturbance of hepatic and intestinal microcirculation in experimental liver cirrhosis

2005

AIM: To analyze hepatic, mesenteric and mucosal microcirculation and leukocyte-endothelium interaction (LEI) in a rat model with liver cirrhosis. METHODS: Hepatic cirrhosis was induced in Wistar rats by gavage with carbon tetrachloride, and intravital videomicroscopy was performed in liver, mesentery and small intestine mucosa. Special emphasis is given on microcirculatory and morphometric changes during cirrhotic portal hypertension. RESULTS: LEI was influenced significantly in the cirrhotic liver but not in the gut. Blood flow measurement showed significant differences among liver, main mesenteric vessels and the mucosa. The results of our study indicate that liver cirrhosis leads to alte…

Impaired cortico-bulbar tract function in dysarthria due to hemispheric stroke. Functional testing using transcranial magnetic stimulation.

1997

We investigated cortico-lingual and cortico-orofacial tract function utilizing transcranial magnetic stimulation in 18 consecutive patients with dysarthria due to hemispheric stroke. Delayed responses (conduction time > mean + 2.5 SD of that of 43 controls) or absent responses were considered abnormal. In all patients, motor-cortex stimulation of the lesion side demonstrated absent (13 patients) or delayed (five patients) responses to the tongue bilaterally (17 patients) or unilaterally (one patient). In 14 patients the contralateral orofacial responses were either absent (13 patients) or delayed (one patient). According to the electrophysiological findings, all lesions revealed by CT or MR…

Elevated plasma histamine concentration as a sensitive real-time parameter for distinct phases of surgical trauma: a tool for technology assessment.

1991

High technology plays an important role in surgery, either to expand surgical procedures or to reduce tissue trauma, which is a main goal of minimum invasive surgery. Due to the tremendous increase of costs the problem of technology assessment will not only be solved by statistical methods, but also by biomedical considerations and laboratory tests. Histamine release could be an indication for tissue trauma, which is caused directly by tissue damage or indirectly by infection or hypoxia. Therefore histamine release was investigated during different phases of operation in two clinically very important and complex situations: resection of liver metastases of colorectal carcinoma and resection…

Effects of Steatosis on Hepatic Hemodynamics in Patients with Metabolic Syndrome

2015

The aim of our study was to assess the hemodynamic changes in hepatic and splenic circulation using B-mode ultrasonography and color Doppler ultrasonography, in a population of patients with metabolic syndrome divided with respect to the presence or absence of steatosis diagnosed by ultrasonography. One hundred forty-one patients were included in the study. The severity of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease was classified as mild, moderate or severe. Visceral fat thickness, longitudinal diameter of the spleen, diameter of the portal vein, mean maximum portal vein flow velocity, hepatic artery and splenic artery resistivity indexes and hepatic vein flow phasicity were measured. Non-alcoholic …

Relationship between adherence to the Mediterranean Diet, intracerebral hemorrhage, and its location

2018

INTRODUCTION: Although some authors evaluated the relationship between adherence to the Mediterranean Diet (MeDi) and both ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke, hemorrhagic stroke alone is not yet examined. AIMS: We conducted a retrospective study to evaluate the relationship between adherence to MeDi and intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) and different locations of ICH (ganglionic/internal capsule, brainstem/cerebellum, or lobar). METHODS: We analyzed charts and collected data of all consecutive patients with ICH admitted to our Internal Medicine Ward from 2005 to 2014. A scale indicating the degree of adherence to the traditional MeDi Score was constructed. RESULTS: When compared with 100 subjects…

CT after enucleation of renal cell carcinoma.

1994

Computed tomography (CT) was performed in 28 patients 2 weeks to 120 months after enucleation of renal cell carcinoma. The postoperative defect could be exactly localized in all patients. A wedge-shaped (N = 11) or concave (N = 9) morphology was typical. No dependence between morphology of the defect and localization or size of the tumor or the operative technique was observed. The defects were smaller (1.9 cm) than the original prominent tumors (3.6 cm). Defect size was dependent on the operative technique: closure by suture of the renal capsule in smaller defects or by fat flap in larger ones. Postoperative hematomas or delayed perfusion in the adjacent parenchyma were seen in five patien…
