High-precision electron-capture Q value measurement of 111In for electron-neutrino mass determination

2022

A precise determination of the ground state $^{111}$In ($9/2^+$) electron capture to ground state of $^{111}$Cd ($1/2^+$) $Q$ value has been performed utilizing the double Penning trap mass spectrometer, JYFLTRAP. A value of 857.63(17) keV was obtained, which is nearly a factor of 20 more precise than the value extracted from the Atomic Mass Evaluation 2020 (AME2020). The high-precision electron-capture $Q$ value measurement along with the nuclear energy level data of 866.60(6) keV, 864.8(3) keV, 855.6(10) keV, and 853.94(7) keV for $^{111}$Cd was used to determine whether the four states are energetically allowed for a potential ultra-low $Q$-value $\beta^{}$ decay or electron-capture deca…

Experimental neutron capture data of 58Ni from the CERN n_TOF facility

2014

The $^{58}$Ni $(n,\gamma)$ cross section has been measured at the neutron time of flight facility n_TOF at CERN, in the energy range from 27 meV up to 400 keV. In total, 51 resonances have been analyzed up to 122 keV. Maxwellian averaged cross sections (MACS) have been calculated for stellar temperatures of kT$=$5-100 keV with uncertainties of less than 6%, showing fair agreement with recent experimental and evaluated data up to kT = 50 keV. The MACS extracted in the present work at 30 keV is 34.2$\pm$0.6$_\mathrm{stat}\pm$1.8$_\mathrm{sys}$ mb, in agreement with latest results and evaluations, but 12% lower relative to the recent KADoNIS compilation of astrophysical cross sections. When in…

NMR relaxometry measurements of Fricke gel dosimeters exposed to neutrons

2014

Fricke infused gel matrices offer several features making them suitable for dosimetric applications; among the set here are tissue equivalence, low cost and ease of preparation. Their nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxation properties can be used as a radiation detector for the dosimetry of beams used in cancer therapy. In recent years neutron capture therapy has been resumed for the treatment of various types of cancer and it requires three-dimensional mapping of the neutron fields. In this work, we investigated this particular application through NMR relaxometry and MR imaging of Fricke gels exposed to neutrons. We analyzed both the R1 and R2 relaxation rates, which relate to the long…

Novel Techniques for Constraining Neutron-capture Rates relevant to Heavy-element Nucleosynthesis

2017

In this contribution we discuss new experimental approaches to indirectly provide information on neutron-capture rates relevant to the $r$-process. In particular, we focus on applications of the Oslo method to extract fundamental nuclear properties for reaction-rate calculations: the nuclear level density and the $\gamma$ strength function. Two methods are discussed in detail, the Oslo method in inverse kinematics and the beta-Oslo method. These methods present a first step towards constraining neutron-capture rates of importance to the $r$-process.

Double-βtransformations in isobaric triplets with mass numbersA=124, 130, and 136

2012

The Q values of double-electron capture in ${}^{124}$Xe, ${}^{130}$Ba, and ${}^{136}$Ce and double-beta decay of ${}^{124}$Sn and ${}^{130}$Te have been determined with the Penning-trap mass spectrometer SHIPTRAP with a few hundred eV uncertainty. These nuclides are members of three isobaric triplets with common daughter nuclides. The main goal of this work was to investigate the existence of the resonant enhancement of the neutrinoless double-electron-capture rates in ${}^{124}$Xe and ${}^{130}$Ba in order to assess their suitability for the search for neutrinoless double-electron capture. Based on our results, in neither of these cases is the resonance condition fulfilled.

Nuclear Physics Constraints to Bring the Astrophysical R-Process to the “Waiting Point”

1988

Rapid neutron-capture (r-process) nucleosynthesis of heavy elements generally involves the participation of large numbers of stable to highly unstable nuclear species. Most of these properties are experimentally unknown and have to be predicted from nuclear models. So far, the uncertainties of such predictions have not allowed putting substantial constraints on astrophysical scenarios. For the classical r-process it is shown that the s-decay properties of only a few key-nuclei, i.e. the recently measured “waiting-point” nuclei 130Cd82 and 80Zn50 together with new shell-model predictions for their N ≈ 82 and 50 neighbours, may be sufficient to explain the observed r-abundances in the A ≈ 130…

Probing the nuclide 180W for neutrinoless double-electron capture exploration

2011

Abstract The mass difference of the nuclides 180 W and 180 Hf has been measured with the Penning-trap mass spectrometer SHIPTRAP to investigate 180 W as a possible candidate for the search for neutrinoless double-electron capture. The Q ϵ ϵ -value was measured to 143.20(27) keV. This value in combination with the calculations of the atomic electron wave functions and other parameters results in a half-life of the 0 + → 0 + ground-state to ground-state double-electron capture transition of approximately 5 × 10 27 years / 〈 m ϵ ϵ [ eV ] 〉 2 .

Accurate Q value for the 74Se double-electron-capture decay

2010

Abstract The Q value of the neutrinoless double-electron-capture ( 0 ν ECEC ) decay of 74Se was measured by using the JYFLTRAP Penning trap. The determined value is 1209.169(49) keV, which practically excludes the possibility of a complete energy degeneracy with the second 2 + state (1204.205(7) keV) of 74Ge in a resonant 0 ν ECEC decay. We have also computed the associated nuclear matrix element by using a microscopic nuclear model with realistic two-nucleon interactions. The computed matrix element is found to be quite small. The failure of the resonant condition, combined with the small nuclear matrix element and needed p-wave capture, suppresses the decay rate strongly and thus excludes…

Shell-model study of partial muon-capture rates in light nuclei

1998

Abstract The nuclear shell model is used to study ordinary muon capture of light nuclei in the p, sd and p-sd shell-model spaces. Several well-established two-body interactions are applied to calculate the involved nuclear matrix elements and the emerging results are compared with each other. The resulting theoretical partial muon-capture rates are compared with experimental data and their stability against different model spaces and interactions studied. The effects of the induced-pseudoscalar strength, C p , on the capture rates is discussed. The relation between the allowed partial muon capture rates and the Gamow-Teller strength function is stressed.
