AbstractThe reversible acetylcholine esterase inhibitor (−)-physostigmine (eserine) is the prototype of a new class of nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) activating ligands: it induces cation fluxes into nAChR-rich membrane vesicles from Torpedo marmorala electric tissue even under conditions of antagonist blocked acetylcholine binding sites (Okonjo, Kuhlmann, Maclicke, Neuron, in press). This suggests that eserine exerts its channel-activating property via binding sites at the nAChR separate from those of the natural transmitter. Carbendazim is a systemic fungicide that is commonly used on several crops (tobacco, fruit, vegetables, cereals, etc.). This fungicide is used to control fungal infections in vineyards. It is indicated against Botrytis cinerea, Uncinula necator, Plasmopara viticola and other fungi and can be used either alone or coupled with other fungicides. However, there is a lack of in-depth studies to evaluate its effectiveness against growth of Aspergillus carbonarius isolated from grapes and OTA production. Aims: To study the ability of multi-layer perceptron artificial neural networks (MLP-ANN) and radial-basis function networks (RBFNs) to predict ochratoxin A (OTA) concentration over time in grape-based cultures of Aspergillus carbonarius under different conditions of temperature, water activity (a(w)) and sub-inhibitory doses of the fungicide carbendazim. Daphnia magna (F0 generation) was exposed to different sublethal molinate concentrations (0, 3.77, 4.71, 6.28, 9.42, and 18.85 mg/L) during 21 days. Chronic toxicity tests, using the same herbicide concentrations, were also carried out during 21 days using neonates of F1 first brood (F1-1st) and F1 third brood (F1-3rd) offspring generations from the parentals (F0) preexposed to the herbicide. Abstract The photochemistry of some 1,2,4-oxadiazoles in the presence of sulphur nucleophiles has been investigated. Irradiation of the 5-amino-3-phenyl- and 3,5-diphenyl-1,2,4-oxadiazole at γ = 254 nm in methanol in the presence of sodium hydrogen sulphide or thiols gave a photo-induced redox reaction at the ring ON bond, leading to the corresponding N -substituted benzamidines. The fate of five herbicides (glyphosate, glufosinate-ammonium, phenmedipham, ethofumesate and metamitron) was studied in two Finnish sugar beet fields for 26 months. Soil types were sandy loam and clay. Two different herbicide-tolerant sugar beet cultivars and three different herbicide application schedules were used. Meteorological data were collected throughout the study and soil properties were thoroughly analysed. An extensive data set of herbicide residue concentrations in soil was collected. The ability of three modified tetrapeptides, representing fragments of the C-reactive protein (CRP) sequence and stabilized in the first peptide bond by retro-inverso modification, to affect the secretion of nitric oxide (NO) was studied in macrophages of BALB/c mice. In human epithelial-like DLD-I cells, nitric oxide synthase (NOS) II expression was induced by interferon-gamma (100 u ml(-1)) alone and, to a larger extent, by a cytokine mixture (CM) consisting of interferon-gamma, interleukin-1beta (50 u ml(-1)) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (10 ng ml(-1)). 2. CM-induced NOS II expression was inhibited by tyrphostin B42 (mRNA down to 1%; nitrite production down to 0.5% at 300 microM) and tyrphostin A25 (mRNA down to 24%, nitrite production down to 1% at 200 microM), suggesting the involvement of janus kinase 2 (JAK-2).
