Esterase inhibition by synergists in the western flower thrips Frankliniella occidentalis.

2010

BACKGROUND: Western flower thrips (WFT), Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande), is among the most important crop pests in the south-eastern region of Spain. Its increasing resistance to insecticides constitutes a serious problem, and understanding the mechanisms involved is therefore of great interest. Use of synergists to inhibit the enzymes involved in insecticide detoxification is widely used to determine their responsibility for insecticide resistance. However, they do not always act as intended or expected, and caution must be exercised when interpreting synergist results. RESULTS: Laboratory-selected strains of WFT were used to analyse the effects of the synergists piperonyl butoxide …

Analysis of toxic elements in plastic components for toys. Multi-elemental determination by x-ray fluorescence

1993

Abstract An x-ray fluorescence method is proposed for the multi-elemental determination of toxic elements in plastic articles for children, viz., Sb(III), Ba, Cd, Cr(III), Hg, Pb and As(III). Mineralization is achieved by using molten sodium hydroxide to decompose the organic matrix, with sodium nitrate as auxiliary oxidant. Stable solutions containing the chemical species for analysis are obtained. The species are separated from the solution by (co)precipitation, in a medium of NH+4-NH3 buffer (pH 8.5) with sodium diethyldithiocarbamate, sodium rhodizonate and Fe3+, which acts as a carrier. The precipitates deposited on filter-paper are placed in the x-ray spectrometer in fine layer morpho…

NF-κB Inhibition Restores Sensitivity to Fas-Mediated Apoptosis in Lymphoma Cell Lines

2003

Failure to perform the Fas-related apoptosis pathway can account for tumor resistance both to chemotherapeutic agents and to immunological effectors. We studied the role of NK-kappaB in Fas-resistance, employing the Fas-sensitive human T-lymphoma HuT78 cell line and its Fas-resistant variants HuT78B1 and HuT78G9. All these cell lines expressed high levels of constitutively activated NF-kappaB. Pretreatment of cells with NF-kappaB inhibitors (PDTC, MG132, or SN50) strongly enhanced CH11-induced apoptosis in HuT78 and Hut78G9 cells, while only MG132 showed a similar potentiating effect in HuT78B1. The described synergism was significantly inhibited by pretreatment with the anti-Fas-blocking a…

Determination of five pesticide residues in oranges by matrix solid-phase dispersion and liquid chromatography to estimate daily intake of consumers.

2001

Abstract Residues of benzoylphenylurea insecticides (diflubenzuron, hexaflumuron, and flufenuxuron), carboxamide acaricides (hexythiazox), and carbamate insecticides (benfuracarb) were determined in 150 orange fruit samples from September 1998 to June 1999, to estimate exposure of the Valencian population to oranges contaminated with these newly developed pesticides. The method for monitoring these residues is based on matrix solid-phase dispersion and liquid chromatography with UV or atmospheric pressure chemical ionization/mass spectrometry (APCI/MS) detection. Orange samples representing 11 varieties were collected from an agricultural cooperative and examined for the 5 pesticides. In 74…

Matrix solid-phase dispersion microextraction and determination by high-performance liquid chromatography with UV detection of pesticide residues in …

1999

A multiresidue method based on matrix solid-phase dispersion (MSPD) microextraction was studied to determine the carbamate, benfuracarb, and urea insecticides, diflubenzuron, flufenoxuron hexaflumuron and hexythiazox, used in control of citrus pests. Optimisation of different parameters, such as the type of solid support for matrix dispersion, elution solvents and the clean-up step were carried out. The method used 0.5 g of orange sample, C8 bonded silica as MSPD sorbent and dichloromethane as eluting solvent. Recoveries, at spiked concentrations below the maximum residue levels established by Spanish Government, were between 74 and 84% with relative standard deviations ranging from 2 to 4%…

Quantitative structure-activity relationships for the toxicity of organophosphorus and carbamate pesticides to the Rainbow trout Onchorhyncus mykiss.

2006

This study has investigated the development of quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSARs) for the toxicity to rainbow trout Onchorhyncus mykiss Walbaum of 75 organophosphorus and carbamate pesticides. The toxicity data were obtained from an openly available toxicological database and were selected to be representative of a single endpoint. A large number of physicochemical and structural descriptors were calculated for the pesticides. QSAR models were developed using multiple linear regression and partial least-squares analyses. Following the removal of a small number of outliers, predictive QSARs were developed on small numbers of mechanistically relevant descriptors. Applying m…

Efficient Synthesis of 5-Chalcogenyl-1,3-oxazin-2-ones by Chalcogen-Mediated Yne-Carbamate Cyclisation: An Experimental and Theoretical Study

2014

A very efficient synthesis of 5-chalcogenyl-1,3-oxazin-2-ones has been accomplished by the chalcogen-mediated yne–carbamate cyclisation of chiral, non-racemic N-Cbz-protected propargylic amines using PhXY (X = Se, S, Te; Y = Br or Cl) as electrophile sources. The reactions gave good-to-excellent yields for a wide range of substrates. In all cases the reaction was totally regioselective, occurring by a 6-endo-dig process regardless of the nature of the reagent and of the substituents in the starting material. This methodology permits the formation of the 1,3-oxazin-2-one moiety as well as the simultaneous installation of a chalcogen functionality onto the heterocyclic ring. The experimental …

A Functional Role of IκB-ε in Endothelial Cell Activation

2000

Abstract The NF-κB inhibitor IκB-ε is a new member of the IκB protein family, but its functional role in regulating NF-κB-mediated induction of adhesion molecule expression is unknown. In vascular endothelial cells, IκB-ε associates predominantly with the NF-κB subunit Rel A and to a lesser extent with c-Rel, whereas IκB-α and IκB-β associate with Rel A only. Following stimulation with TNF-α, pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate (PDTC), N-acetylcysteine, and dexamethasone prevented IκB kinase-induced IκB-α, but not IκB-β or IκB-ε phosphorylation and degradation. Since the activation of NF-κB is required for the induction of adhesion molecule expression, we examined the role of IκB-ε in the transacti…
