In this study the environmental performance of a first of a kind integrated process based on supercritical water gasification and supercritical water oxidation, was evaluated using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). The process was applied to the treatment of carbon black and used oil as model waste. Mass and energy balances were performed using Aspen Plus, and the environmental assessment was carried out through SimaPro. An Approach on the Hydrogen Absorption in Carbon Black after Gamma Irradiation

In this work, different samples of an industrial carbon black are used to study the hydrogen intake from an over pres-surized atmosphere and its changes due to alteration of its level of crystallinity produced by ¿-irradiation. The monitor-ing of the hydrogen adsorption was made by means of thermogravimetric analysis and by measurements of some elec-trical parameters as the Seebeck coefficient. X-ray diffraction shows that the irradiation diminishes the level of crystal-line perfection. These results show interesting possibilities to use carbon black as cheap hydrogen absorbers.

Abstract Total atmospheric particulate matter, total carbon (TC), and black carbon (BC) were measured over two periods, spring and summer 1994, at a sampling location in Mainz, Germany. An optical (aethalometer) and a thermal method were used to determine BC since previous studies have shown that the optical method is dependent on the source of aerosols. The thermal method chosen for calibration enables the determination of molar hydrogen to carbon ratios for total particulate carbon and BC if quartz fiber filters were pre-treated at 850°C for 4 h. Effective conductivity in association with model structure and spatial inhomogeneity of polymer/carbon black composites

The relationship between effective conductivity and cell structure of polyethylene/carbon composites as well as between effective conductivity and spatial distribution of carbon black are discussed. Following Yoshida's model both structures can, in a way, be said to be intermediate between the well known Maxwell-Garnett (MG) and Bruggeman (BR) limiting structures. Using TEM photographs on composites with various carbon blacks we have observed that the larger is Garncarek's inhomogeneity measure H of two-dimensional (2D) representative distribution of the carbon black, the smaller is the effective conductivity of the composite.
Polyisoprene-carbon black nanocomposites as tensile strain and pressure sensor materials

Abstract Electrically conductive polymer composites (ECPC) are shown as prospective large-size flexible pressure and stretch sensors for detecting of dangerous deformations and vibrations of vehicle parts. Reversible change of resistance dependent on stretch and pressure is obtained in electro-conductive polymer nanocomposites. At certain concentrations of carbon nano-particles a change of electrical resistance by more than four orders is observed at 40% relative stretch. The maximum sensitivity of nanocomposites is observed in the vicinity of the transition of electro-conductive percolation. Nanostructured carbon black-polyisoprene composite is prepared and investigated. A giant reversible tensoresistive effect -- dependence of electrical resistance vs. uniaxial tension deformation - is found. A new application of the conductive atomic force microscope for the carbon black network mapping in a nonconducting matrix is reported.
