Changes in net photosynthesis, chlorophyll fluorescence and xanthophyll cycle interconversions during freeze-thaw cycles in the Mediterranean moss Le…

1999

The tolerance to freezing and thawing of Leucodon sciuroides, a moss growing in mountainous areas of the Mediterranean (south-east Spain), was investigated by means of CO2 gas exchange, modulated chlorophyll (Chl) a fluorescence and pigment analysis by high-performance liquid chromatography. Evidence is presented for freezing-induced decreases in CO2 fixation that enhance non-radiative dissipation of absorbed light energy, a process which protects the photosynthetic apparatus. The photosynthetic apparatus of L. sciuroides remained fully recuperable after freezing, as indicated by the recovery of photosynthetic CO2 fixation and Chl fluorescence parameters to pre-freezing values during thawin…

Characterization of commercial synthetic resins by pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry: application to modern art and conservation.

2009

To characterize a set of synthetic resins, a methodology by pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) has been developed. The studied reference materials were commercial versions of a wide range of synthetic resins. For each polymer, the pyrolytic and chromatographic conditions were optimized to adequately resolve the fragment mixture in a short time. The proposed analytical method does not require previous treatment of the sample, and due to its high sensitivity, only a small sample quantity in the microgram range can be used. The pyrolysis temperature was found to have little effect on the obtained pyrograms. The summarized data set for the individual polymer materials, es…

Microwave-assisted extraction of OCPs, PCBs and PAHs concentrated by semi-permeable membrane devices (SPMDs)

2005

Abstract Microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) has been evaluated as an alternative to dialysis for extraction of some water-borne hydrophobic contaminants sampled by semi-permeable membrane devices (SPMDs). Seven organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), 11 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and 13 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were accumulated in SPMDs at nanogram levels and extracted with three 3-min irradiation cycles with 33 mL of a solvent mixture hexane–water (10:1,v/v) in each cycle. The developed MAE method gave for all analytes investigated statistically comparable extraction yields with those found by dialysis carried out with a total volume of 250 mL hexane for 48 h at room temper…

Solvent quality as reflected in concentration- and temperature-dependent Flory-Huggins interaction parameters

2001

Flory-Huggins interaction parameters (χ) between poly(dimethylsiloxane) (weight-average molecular weight = 152 kg/mol) and various solvents (methyl ethyl ketone, toluene and n-octane) were determined as a function of composition and temperature with vapor-pressure measurements. These data, complemented by independent information for dilute and very concentrated solutions, serve as the basis for a discussion of solvent quality via different theoretical relations. Regardless of polymer concentration, the χ values fall from methyl ethyl ketone via toluene to n-octane, the ketone being the worst solvent and the hydrocarbon being the best solvent. The variation of χ with composition and temperat…

Separation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons under isocratic conditions by a column switching technique

1994

A simple and efficient method of separating a 20-component PAH-mixture (RSM 1647 standard mixture +benzene, toluene, perylene and coronene) by RP-HPLC is described. Separation was by using two Superspher-100 RP-18 cartridges thermostatted at different temperatures under isocratic conditions with water-acetonitrile eluent. The analysis time with complete resolution of all components can be reduced to 15 min.

Structural selectivity provided by starburst dendrimers as pseudostationary phase in electrokinetic chromatography

1995

Abstract Starburst dendrimers (SBDs) were used as a pseudostationary phase in electrokinetic chromatography (EKC) of hydrophobic compounds. The selectivity of SBD-mediated EKC (SBD-EKC) was different from those in micellar EKC (MEKC) systems, in spite of the apparent structural resemblance between micelles and SBDs. The SBDs provided similar selectivity as polymer gel packing materials in reversed-phase liquid chromatography (RPLC), showing little selectivity for alkyl groups and clear preference for aromatic compounds, especially for rigid, planar polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons. The alkylation of SBDs resulted in the increased retention and hydrophobic selectivity while maintaining the …

Prediction of the retention in reversed-phase liquid chromatography using solute-mobile phase-stationary phase polarity parameters.

2002

Abstract A previously reported algorithm, based on the equation: log k=( log k) 0 +p(P N m −P N s ) , that relates the retention in reversed-phase liquid chromatography with solute (p), mobile phase (PmN) and stationary phase (PsN) relative polarity parameters, is improved. The retention data reported by several authors for different sets of compounds, eluted with acetonitrile–water and methanol–water mixtures, are used to test the algorithm and elaborate a database of p values. The methodology is successfully applied to predict the retention using PmN values calculated as PmN=1.00−(2.13ϕ)/(1+1.42ϕ) for acetonitrile–water and PmN=1.00−(1.33ϕ)/(1+0.47ϕ) for methanol–water, ϕ being the organi…

Theory-based improvements of continuous polymer fractionation demonstrated for poly(carbonate)

1992

For the first time, a quantitative theoretical analysis (liquid/liquid phase equilibria treated by means of the continuous thermodynamics) of the operating characteristics of continuous polymer fractionation (CPF) was performed. The results of these calculations were compared with data published for CPF of polyethylene. It turned out that the efficiency of the conventional CPF corresponds to approximately two theoretical plates only. For this reason, several improvements, suggested by theoretical considerations, were realized experimentally, for which purpose the system dichloromethane/diethylene glycol/bisphenol-A polycarbonate was chosen. The pulsating sieve-bottom column was replaced by …
