A Green Approach for Recycling Compact Discs

2023

Compact discs (CDs) and digital versatile discs (DVDs) are mainly made by polycarbonate disc, a thin layer of aluminum or silver, a thin layer of a coating and a thin layer of a label of paper or PET. The recycling of these discs is difficult due to the removal of these non-polymeric layers and to our best knowledge, no industrial plants have been resent for their recycling. In this work, we propose a facile way to remove the non-polymeric layers and investigate the effect of the repetitive extrusion process on the processability and on the mechanical properties of the recycled polycarbonate. A few works have been published dealing with both the removal of the non-polymeric layers and the m…

Extensional deformations during Neogene chain building in Sicily

2010

ABSTRACT In the Madonie-Nebrodi Mts (Northern Sicily belt) both Mesozoic carbonate platform/basin-derived deformed successions and Neogene foredeep deposits outcrop. Thrust sheets piled-up southwards in thin-skin piggy-back sequence. The chain building process began during the Oligo-Miocene. The syntectonic deposits involved in the compressional tectonics give evidence that syn-sedimentary extensional faults developed during fold nucleation and amplification. Syn-sedimentary extensional faults affect the foredeep strata at different stratigraphic levels, which are bounded by unconformities. Normal faults and bedding show constant cut-off relationships and are progressively tilted youngwards…

A route to simple nonionic surfactants

2016

AbstractA method for the synthesis of nonionic surfactants – N-alkyl-O-(2-hydroxyethyl) carbamates is proposed by acylation of fatty amines with ethylene carbonate without any solvent or catalyst. The surface tension of the prepared surfactants was measured, toxicity and biodegradability were determined for the surfactant with n-dodecyl as a hydrophobic group and N-monosubstituted amide and hydroxyl groups for their hydrophilic part.

Methane-oxidizing and photoautotrophic bacteria are major producers in a humic lake with large anoxic hypolimnion

2011

Heterotrophic processes are considered to prevail in lakes with high terrestrial loading and a high content of dissolved organic carbon. However, previous studies have shown abundant methanotrophic bacteria (MOB) and photoautotrophic green sulphur bacteria (GSB) in some boreal lakes. We used genetic and lipid biomarkers to follow the seasonal succession of the abundance and carbon biomass of the major bacterial groups in Lake Mekkojarvi, a small Finnish polyhumic lake with a large anoxic hypolimnion. Biomarkers were based on length heterogeneity analysis of 16S rRNA gene amplification by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) (LH-PCR) and on phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) analysis. Representative …

Iron and pH regulating the photochemical mineralization of dissolved organic carbon

2017

Solar radiation mineralizes dissolved organic matter (DOM) to dissolved inorganic carbon through photochemical reactions (DIC photoproduction) that are influenced by iron (Fe) and pH. This study addressed as to what extent Fe contributes to the optical properties of the chromophoric DOM (CDOM) and DIC photoproduction at different pH values. We created the associations of Fe and DOM (Fe-DOM) that cover the range of loadings of Fe on DOM and pH values found in freshwaters. The introduced Fe enhanced the light absorption by CDOM independent of pH. Simulated solar irradiation decreased the light absorption by CDOM (i.e., caused photobleaching). Fe raised the rate of photobleaching and steepened…

Preliminary results of a multi-scale structural analisys in an analogue carbonate reservoir (Hyblean Plateau, Sicily, Italy)

2010

With the aim of studying the multi-scale fault architecture and permeability in hydrocarbon-rich porous carbonate rocks, we are currently involved in a project focused on the structural analysis of fractured and faulted platform-to-ramp carbonates cropping out in the Hyblean Plateau (Sicily, Italy). The Hyblean Plateau is part of the Maghrebian foreland and forms the northern portion of the African plate. The plateau is a NE-oriented structural high crosscut by a large-scale N10°-20°E oriented strike-slip fault system, named Scicli-Ragusa, which was affected by right-lateral kinematics during the Upper Miocene-Lower Pliocene. Some authors documented a recent activity of the Scicli-Ragusa fa…

Active degassing of crustal CO2 in areas of tectonic collision: A case study from the Pollino and Calabria sectors (Southern Italy)

2022

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is released from the Earth’s interior into the atmosphere through both volcanic and non-volcanic sources in a variety of tectonic settings. A quantitative understanding of CO2 outgassing fluxes in different geological settings is thus critical for decoding the link between the global carbon budget and different natural processes (e.g., volcanic eruption and earthquake nucleation) and the effects on the climate evolution over geological time. It has recently been proposed that CO2 degassing from non-volcanic areas is a major component of the natural CO2 emission budget, but available data are still sparse and incomplete. Here, we report the results of a geochemical surve…
