A Band Model of Cambium Development: Opportunities and Prospects
2021
More than 60% of tree phytomass is concentrated in stem wood, which is the result of periodic activity of the cambium. Nevertheless, there are few attempts to quantitatively describe cambium dynamics. In this study, we develop a state-of-the-art band model of cambium development, based on the kinetic heterogeneity of the cambial zone and the connectivity of the cell structure. The model describes seasonal cambium development based on an exponential function under climate forcing which can be effectively used to estimate the seasonal cell production for individual trees. It was shown that the model is able to simulate different cell production for fast-, middle- and slow-growing trees under …
Stationary, Second Use Battery Energy Storage Systems and Their Applications: A Research Review
2021
The global demand for electricity is rising due to the increased electrification of multiple sectors of economic activity and an increased focus on sustainable consumption. Simultaneously, the share of cleaner electricity generated by transient, renewable sources such as wind and solar energy is increasing. This has made additional buffer capacities for electrical grids necessary. Battery energy storage systems have been investigated as storage solutions due to their responsiveness, efficiency, and scalability. Storage systems based on the second use of discarded electric vehicle batteries have been identified as cost-efficient and sustainable alternatives to first use battery storage syste…

Cleavage of Ge–Ge and Sn–Sn Triple Bonds in Heavy Group 14 Element Alkyne Analogues (EAriPr4)2 (E = Ge, Sn; AriPr4 = C6H3-2,6(C6H3-2,6-iPr2)2) by Rea…
2016
The reactions of heavier group 14 element alkyne analogues (EAriPr4)2 (E = Ge, Sn; AriPr4 = C6H3-2,6-(C6H3-2,6-iPr2)2) with the group 6 transition-metal carbonyls M(CO)6 (M = Cr, Mo, W) under UV irradiation resulted in the cleavage of the E–E triple bond and the formation of the complexes {AriPr4EM(CO)4}2 (1–6), which were characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction as well as by IR and multinuclear NMR spectroscopy. Single-crystal X-ray structural analyses of 1–6 showed that the complexes have a nearly planar rhomboid M2E2 core with three-coordinate group 14 atoms. The coordination geometry at the group 6 metals is distorted octahedral formed by four carbonyl groups as well as two br…

Benthic foodweb structure in a large shallow lake studied by stable isotope analysis
2014
The benthic foodweb structure of Lake Võrtsjärv, a large (270 km2), shallow, and turbid Estonian lake, was evaluated based on C and N stable-isotope signatures (δ13C, δ15N). Variation in δ13C between sampling sites was not related to site proximity to the littoral zone or the more vegetated southern part of the lake, but rather appeared to be influenced by in-situ site peculiarities. δ13C was stable temporally and between functional feeding groups, a result implying that the whole benthic food web of the lake relies largely on the same C source admixture, essentially particulate organic matter (POM). Thus, the foodweb composition of Lake Võrtsjärv is remarkably homogeneous given the lake’s …
In-depth characterization of denitrifier communities across different soil ecosystems in the tundra
2022
Abstract Background In contrast to earlier assumptions, there is now mounting evidence for the role of tundra soils as important sources of the greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N2O). However, the microorganisms involved in the cycling of N2O in this system remain largely uncharacterized. Since tundra soils are variable sources and sinks of N2O, we aimed at investigating differences in community structure across different soil ecosystems in the tundra. Results We analysed 1.4 Tb of metagenomic data from soils in northern Finland covering a range of ecosystems from dry upland soils to water-logged fens and obtained 796 manually binned and curated metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs). We then sear…
