Dissolution process is a complex phenomenon controlled by several factors as like lithology, porosity, stress orientation, environmental conditions and networks of fractures. Then, fault zone and fractures play an important role in fluid circulation and in dissolution, acting as barriers or conduits. Abstract A systematic survey of soil CO 2 concentrations was carried out on the flanks of Somma–Vesuvius volcano in order to constrain possible pathways responsible of carbon dioxide diffuse degassing taking place during the present state of quiescence. Measurements were performed at 1162 sites in late winter–spring 2000, highlighting that soil CO 2 concentrations range from 50 to 10500 ppmV. A statistical analysis was developed in order to define the threshold value of anomaly and separate the biogenic CO 2 component, produced by soil respiration, from the inorganic component of deep provenance. Abstract Several depositional environments associated with Callovian-Oxfordian condensed series of the southeast of the Paris Basin are defined. As sedimentation rates were very low, variations in palaeodepth, which were synchronous at regional scale, were taken to directly reflect fluctuations in accommodation potential. Within a major trend toward increased accommodation potential, five sharp upturns and one sharp downturn are detected. A biostratigraphic unit preservation index is denned to quantify and discuss the low preservation of sediments in these condensed series. This index is seen to vary with accommodation potential.
Deep-seated gravitational slope deformations in western Sicily: Controlling factors, triggering mechanisms, and morphoevolutionary models

Abstract A study of deep-seated gravitational slope deformation (DSGSD) phenomena affecting areas of various geological and geomorphological settings in western Sicily is described. Western Sicily is underlain by a thin-skinned imbricate wedge of Meso–Cenozoic carbonate and siliciclastic rocks that formed by the stacking of several thrust nappes over the Iblean foreland. Locally, the original thrust sheets are folded and cut by high-angle faults. Large areas of western Sicily now display high relief energy due to Plio-Pleistocene block-faulting and uplifting, and the Quaternary morphogenetic phases are characterised by incision, thereby triggering widespread DSGSDs. Systems tracts and depositional sequences in a carbonate setting: a study of continuous outcrops from platform to basin at the scale of seismic lines

Abstract The application of sequence stratigraphy concepts to carbonates is feasible and this paper presents an example of its successful application. The continuity and lateral extent of outcropping sedimentary sections observed at the scale of a seismic line from platform to basin in the Southern Vercors Plateau (western Alps, France) confirm the validity of sequence stratigraphy concepts when applied to carbonate depositional systems. From the stratal patterns displayed in outcrop, we determined that carbonate lowstand systems tracts are major components in the basin, even in the deep pelagic realm. Hieracium hypochoeroides subsp. peracutisquamum Di Grist., Gottschl. & Raimondo, a new taxon endemic to Basilicata (southern Italy), is described and illustrated. It is confined to the carbonate rocks of Monte della Madonna di Viggiano (Lucanian Apennine, SW Basilicata). Information on its habitat ecology and taxonomic relationships is provided.
