El óxido nítrico es un mediador implicado en el desarrollo de la patología cardiovascular, la principal causa de mortalidad en nuestro entorno, pero su papel no ha sido completamente esclarecido. Recientemente, se ha establecido el mecanismo a través del cual actúa la NT-3 liberada en el endotelio vascular y se ha demostrado su capacidad para, a través de la activación de su receptor TrkC, fosforilar la eNOS y, como consecuencia, aumentar la síntesis de NO en las células que expresan este receptor junto con eNOS.
