Social media is regularly in the ‘news’ for good and for not so good reasons. In career development social media can be used by organisations to further develop a common understanding with clients. For many, social media is simply a collection of online tools that enable communities to share information, communicate and socialise. Research shows that gender inequality is still a major issue in academic science, yet academic societies may serve as underappreciated and effective avenues for promoting female leadership. That is, society membership is often self-selective, and board positions are elected (with a high turnover compared to institutions)—these characteristics, among others, may thus create an environment conducive to gender equality. The EU Human Resource Strategy for Researchers and the working conditions of Finnish fixed-term re-searchers

The Charter and Code incorporating the Human Resource Strategy for Researchers (HRS4R) is a European Commissions initiative to make researchers’ careers more attractive, and increase, and support the mobility of researchers by standardizing the researchers’ careers in EU area. The reputation of the quality of the working life in Finland has been fairly good. However, the university employees’ working conditions are often very precarious. In this article, we study the discrepancy between HRS4R action plans of ten Finnish universities and the survey data dealing the fixed term -researchers working conditions. peerReviewed
