Life situation and identity among single older home-living people: A phenomenologicalhermeneutic study

Being able to continue living in their own home as long as possible is the general preference for many older people, and this is also in line with the public policy in the Nordic countries. The aim of this study was to elucidate the meaning of self-care and health for perception of life situation and identity among single-living older individuals in rural areas in southern Norway. Researchers have studied home from several perspectives, but there is a need for a detailed phenomenological analysis of the emotional intentionality which underlies the meanings and experiences of home as an emotionally charged place. The scientific progress has recently provoked profound physical and conceptual changes related to the end of life (EOL), and it has been necessary an intense debate about EOL and euthanasy. It is significant to define death as the absence of life qualities and not as a physical end. Hence, the end stage of our life is a crucial and meaningful moment. For this reason, it is essential to try to integrate the purely technical perspective with an ethic of guidance, which allows patients to live in dignity their death. For this reason, it urges to engage a continue and deep educational and experiential co-construction on the end of life, aware of its precariousness.

The article raises the issues of social activity aimed at supporting families. In particular, reference is made to the classic concepts of political models of the state organized according to the principles of liberalism, socialism and socliberalism as the middle ground between the first two. This pilot study aims to analyze the effectiveness of a type of non-pharmacological intervention such as the educating and training of professional caregivers on behavioral alterations and prescription of psychotropic drugs of older adults in nursing homes. One hundred and forty-five people from two nursing homes were randomized to either treatment (educational training program for healthcare professionals) or a no-treatment group.
