Geomatics or Geography, that is the question! This is how the authors' idea of merging Geomatics and Geography in this special issue begins, paraphrasing a Shakespearean citation. The common principle that unites these two scientific disciplines, which attempt to describe the territory in the most straightforward way possible. On the other hand, Geomatics and Geography derived from “gèo- “[greek γεω-], as first element of composed words in learned and scientific terminology, meaning “earth”, “globe”, “land surface”.
Object oriented methodology for change detection technique: the case of Scopello-Sicily

This paper describes a change detection approach based on an object-based classification of remote sensing data for the change detection. The history of urban growth and urbanisation reveals that urban areas belong to the most dynamic land cover types on earth. The trend of urban growth is usually towards the urban-rural fringe where there are less built areas, irrigation and other water management systems. Regardless of the regional economic importance, urban growth, particularly the expansion of residential and commercial land use towards the periphery of urban areas, has an impact on the ecosystem. Reservoir monitoring using satellite SAR and GNSS: a case study in southern Italy

Recently, it has been demonstrated that it is possible to relate water levels of a reservoir with its dam displacements. Water levels were determined via remote sensing, while dam displacements were measured via Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). Results have shown that displacements and water levels are correlated.Water levels at the Magazzolo reservoir in southern Italy were firstly retrieved using two remote sensing approaches: by visual matching between the reservoir shoreline and contour lines, and by evaluating the surface extent via unsupervised classification to estimate the water levels with an area/depth relation. A reverse engineering approach to measure the deformations of a sailing yacht

In this work, a multidisciplinary experience, aimed to study the permanent deformations of the hull of a regatta sailing yacht is described. In particular, a procedure to compare two different surfaces of the hull of a small sailing yacht, designed and manufactured at the University of Palermo, has been developed. The first one represents the original CAD model while the second one has been obtained by means of a reverse engineering approach. Il problema dei rifiuti è una questione di grande attualità e di rilevanza nazionale: ogni giorno i servizi d’informazione trattano della cosiddetta “emergenza rifiuti” anche se, visto il perdurare e il rinnovarsi di tante “emergenze”, si dovrebbe parlare di ordinaria situazione di inefficienza del sistema di smaltimento. In realtà, la situazione della “gestione dei rifiuti” risulta essere assai più complessa di quanto emerga dai media nazionali. Il lavoro illustra le fasi di realizzazione del rilevamento architettonico dell’Istituto Agrario Castelnuovo di Palermo. Le operazioni di rilevamento sono state eseguite quale supporto al progetto di restauro. L’area di pertinenza dell’Istituto è costituita da vari edifici a diversa destinazione d’uso e da un esteso parco. Oggetto di questo studio è l’edificio principale del Ginnasio, realizzato dall’architetto Antonino Gentile nella prima metà del XIX secolo. La ricerca svolta affronta le problematiche connesse con la fase di pianificazione ed esecuzione delle riprese fotogrammetriche da SAPR multirotore, con la fase di processamento di blocchi fotogrammetrici e con la valutazione degli aspetti metrici. In particolare, lo scopo della tesi è quello di definire delle procedure di rilievo da SAPR e di analizzare le problematiche connesse con la modellazione tridimensionale da dati SAPR tramite software SfM/fotogrammetrici.
