The current demand for new antimicrobial systems has stimulated research for the development of poly(lactic acid)/carvacrol (PLA/CAR)-based materials able to hinder the growth and spread of microorganisms. The eco-friendly characteristics of PLA and cytocompatibility make it very promising in the perspective of green chemistry applications as material for food and biomedical employments. This study assessed the effect of temperature on the release of essential oil components incorporated by melt compounding into polymeric films. Specifically, polyethylene-co-vinylacetate (EVA) films containing carvacrol (CAR) and cinnamaldehyde (ALD), alone and in combination, were prepared and their surface and mechanical properties and antibacterial and anti-biofilm activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus were evaluated. Combination of phenolic acids and essential oils against Listeria monocytogenes

Abstract Listeria monocytogenes is a psychrotrophic pathogen widely distributed in meat processing plants. Listeriosis presents very low morbidity, but very high mortality rates. Bioactivity of essential oils in phytopathogenic and post-harvest fungi control

[EN] Commercial thyme and lavender essential oils were analysed by GC/MS. Sixty-six compounds accounting for 98.6¿99.6% of total essential oil were identified. Thymol (52.14 ± 0.21%), followed by pcymene (32.24 ± 0.16%), carvacrol (3.71 ± 0.01%) and ¿-terpinene (3.34 ± 0.02%), were the main compounds in thyme essential oil, while large amounts of oxygenated monoterpenes linalool acetate (37.07 ± 0.24%) and linalool (30.16 ± 0.06%) were found in lavender one. Phytochemical composition, anti-inflammatory and antitumour activities of four Teucrium essential oils from Greece

Abstract The essential oils of four Teucrium species were studied and 150 components, in all, were identified. All oils were rich in sesquiterpenes (50.1–55.8%). Spathulenol and δ-cadinene were the main compounds of Teucrium brevifolium oil; caryophyllene and 4-vinyl guaiacol predominated in Teucrium flavum . Carvacrol and caryophyllene oxide predominated in Teucrium montbretii ssp. heliotropiifolium , while carvacrol and caryophyllene were the most abundant components in Teucrium polium ssp. capitatum . Characterisation of the essential oil of Nepeta glomerata Montbret et Aucher ex Bentham from Lebanon and its biological activities.

The essential oil of Nepeta glomerata from Lebanon was studied by means of GC and GC/MS analysis; 70 compounds were identified. The oil was constituted mainly by monoterpenes and the most abundant components were α-pinene, spathulenol and carvacrol. Nepeta glomerata oil showed antibacterial activity, particularly towards Gram-positive bacteria, and also inhibited LPS-induced NO production in macrophage cell line RAW 264.7, with an IC(50) value of 78.1 µg mL(-1). Furthermore, an in vitro cytotoxic assay showed that the oil was more active on a renal adenocarcinoma cell line (48% of inhibition of proliferation at 100 µg mL(-1)) in comparison to an amelanotic melanoma.

Effect of relative humidity on carvacrol release and permeation properties of chitosan based films and coating

International audience; The influence of water vapour conditions on mass transport and barrier properties of chitosan based films and coatings were studied in relation to surface and structural properties. Water contact angles, material swelling, polymer degradation temperature, barrier properties (PO2, PCO2, WVP) and aroma diffusion coefficients were determined. The solvent nature and the presence of carvacrol influenced the surface and structural properties and then the barrier performance of activated chitosan films. Combining carvacrol and nisin in biodegradable films for antibacterial packaging applications

Abstract In this work, the feasibility of antibacterial biopolymeric films containing carvacrol (CRV) and a nisin commercial formulation (Nis) for potential food packaging applications was investigated. The effect of carvacrol on enteric viruses.

Carvacrol, a monoterpenic phenol, is said to have extensive antimicrobial activity in a wide range of food spoilage or pathogenic fungi, yeast and bacteria. The aim of this study was to assess its antiviral activity on norovirus surrogates, feline calicivirus (FCV), murine norovirus (MNV), and hepatitis A virus (HAV), as well as its potential in food applications.
