One-hour post-load plasma glucose level is associated with a worse metabolic profile in children with GH deficiency

Purpose: In children, the plasma glucose value at 1 h (1hPG) during OGTT higher than 132.5 mg/dl is a predictor of alterations in glucose metabolism. We aimed to metabolically characterize GHD children according to 1hPG levels. Methods: Fifty-one GHD children (35 M, 16 F; mean age 8.6 years), grouped according to 1hPG, were evaluated at diagnosis and after 12 months of GH treatment (GHT) and compared with 50 matched controls at baseline. Background Studies evaluating the relationship between soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR), a biomarker inversely related to body iron stores, and risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are scarce and inconclusive. Properties of erythrocyte light refraction in diabetic patients.

Since hyperglycaemia changes the erythrocyte cell membrane fluidity and impairs cell deformity, our goal was to characterize hemoglobin and red blood cell (RBC) light refractive property changes in diabetic patients. Microscopic investigation was carried out on intact and fixed RBCs. To determine the refractive index (RI): smears of peripheral blood were air dried and fixed for 3 min in methanol. Mixtures of polyvinylpyrolidine and buffer of different pH (1:1) were used as embedding media. Transforming growth factors (TGF-alpha and TGF-beta1) in the determination of vitality and wound age: immunohistochemical study on human skin wounds.

In continuation of former investigations on proinflammatory cytokines, in the present study the relevance of the transforming growth factors TGF-alpha and TGF-beta1 was evaluated for the diagnosis of vitality and wound age. Paraffin sections from human skin wounds due to sharp force influence, which had been collected in operations and autopsies, were investigated using immunohistochemistry.
