A proposition of classification of the catastrophe systems based on complexity criteria

2007

Cet article est diffusé sur internet et ne figure pas dans un ouvrage : voir à l'adresse suivante http://www-lih.univ-lehavre.fr/~bertelle/epnacs2007-proceedings/provitolo4epnacs07.pdf; International audience; A classification system of catastrophic events is a methodologyassembling all the catastrophes groups. It is possible to identify several catastrophesclassifications. The most widely known are classified into: nature, consequencesof the event, duration, affected territories and areas of the destroyedzone, and at last into the needed intervention measures. But these criteria ofclassification allow with difficulty to apprehend the complexity of the catastrophe. Thus we propose a classifi…

On critical behaviour in systems of Hamiltonian partial differential equations

2013

Abstract We study the critical behaviour of solutions to weakly dispersive Hamiltonian systems considered as perturbations of elliptic and hyperbolic systems of hydrodynamic type with two components. We argue that near the critical point of gradient catastrophe of the dispersionless system, the solutions to a suitable initial value problem for the perturbed equations are approximately described by particular solutions to the Painlevé-I (P $$_I$$ I ) equation or its fourth-order analogue P $$_I^2$$ I 2 . As concrete examples, we discuss nonlinear Schrödinger equations in the semiclassical limit. A numerical study of these cases provides strong evidence in support of the conjecture.

Electron-density critical points analysis and catastrophe theory to forecast structure instability in periodic solids

2018

The critical points analysis of electron density,i.e. ρ(x), fromab initiocalculations is used in combination with the catastrophe theory to show a correlation between ρ(x) topology and the appearance of instability that may lead to transformations of crystal structures, as a function of pressure/temperature. In particular, this study focuses on the evolution of coalescing non-degenerate critical points,i.e. such that ∇ρ(xc) = 0 and λ1, λ2, λ3≠ 0 [λ being the eigenvalues of the Hessian of ρ(x) atxc], towards degenerate critical points,i.e. ∇ρ(xc) = 0 and at least one λ equal to zero. The catastrophe theory formalism provides a mathematical tool to model ρ(x) in the neighbourhood ofxcand allo…

Randomized controlled trial of the Valencia model of waking hypnosis plus CBT for pain, fatigue, and sleep management in patients with cancer and can…

2016

Background This study evaluated the efficacy of an intervention combining the Valencia model of waking hypnosis with cognitive-behavioral therapy (VMWH-CBT) in managing cancer-related pain, fatigue, and sleep problems in individuals with active cancer or who were post-treatment survivors. We hypothesized that four sessions of VMWH-CBT would result in greater improvement in participants' symptoms than four sessions of an education control intervention. Additionally, we examined the effects on several secondary outcome domains that are associated with increases in these symptoms (depression, pain interference, pain catastrophizing, and cancer treatment distress). Methods The study design was …

Knowledge-driven multi-agent simulation engineering for assessing the effectiveness of disaster management plans

2020

Protecting humans from disasters has been an active mission of governments and experts through the definition of disaster management plans. Defining disaster response strategies is crucial in order to reduce the number of victims and the economic impact. In order to select which response plan is best suited to a specific disaster situation, these plans must be evaluated. However, such evaluation is limited by the high cost of exercises and the specificity of existing simulation models. The approach defended in this thesis combines techniques from Semantic Web and multi-agent simulation to evaluate disaster management response plans. It is composed of four steps : (1) modeling disaster manag…

Wicked behavior and catastrophes in the Roman world: believes, religiosity and politic

2014

Catastrophic health expenditure: A comparative analysis of smoking and non-smoking households in China.

2020

Introduction Smoking is hazardous to health and places a heavy economic burden on individuals and their families. Clearly, smoking in China is prevalent since China is the largest consumer of tobacco in the world. Chinese smoking and nonsmoking households were compared in terms of the incidence and intensity of Catastrophic Health Expenditures (CHEs). The factors associated with catastrophic health expenditures were analyzed. Methods Data for this study were collected from two waves of panel data in 2011 and 2013 from the national China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). A total of 8073 households with at least one member aged above 45 were identified each year. Catastrophic…

Lévi-Strauss face à la catastrophe

2018

Guidelines for the use and interpretation of assays for monitoring cell death in higher eukaryotes

2009

Cell death is essential for a plethora of physiological processes, and its deregulation characterizes numerous human diseases. Thus, the in-depth investigation of cell death and its mechanisms constitutes a formidable challenge for fundamental and applied biomedical research, and has tremendous implications for the development of novel therapeutic strategies. It is, therefore, of utmost importance to standardize the experimental procedures that identify dying and dead cells in cell cultures and/or in tissues, from model organisms and/or humans, in healthy and/or pathological scenarios. Thus far, dozens of methods have been proposed to quantify cell death-related parameters. However, no guid…

Pain and quality of life among residents of Norwegian nursing homes.

2008

Pain is a major problem in the nursing home population, with a prevalence range of 27% to 84%. Pain is an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage or described in terms of such damage (International Association for the Study of Pain, 2008). It has an impact on many aspects of a person's emotional, social, and physical functioning, and on quality of life (QoL) The purpose of this study was to describe pain and QoL in a nursing home population that could self-report pain and to examine the association between QoL and pain in these patients. Pain was measured by a verbal rating scale from "no pain" to "severe pain." Quality of life was measu…
