Bilaterally recorded multiple-unit activity of the cingulate cortex during head turning conditioning with unilateral medial forebrain bundle stimulat…
1993
Cats were conditioned to turn their heads using a tone conditioned stimulus (CS) and medial forebrain bundle stimulation (MFB) unconditioned stimulus (US). The CS+ was delivered to one ear at a time, in random order, followed by the US. A tone of a different frequency was used as a CS-. The cats learned to respond differentially to the CSs showing head movements of greater acceleration to the CS+ than CS- over sessions. Bilateral recordings of cingulate cortex multiple-unit activity showed increased response amplitudes over sessions and larger responses in the hemisphere ipsilateral to the US. Since ipsilateral multiple-unit responses did not differ for the CSs, the asymmetry was probably d…
Asymmetries in classically conditioned head movements and cingulate cortex slow potentials in cats.
1991
Presuming that conditioned head movements in the cat indicate a preference for a specific direction, asymmetries were also expected to be found in bilaterally recorded cingulate cortex slow potentials to a symmetrical tone stimulus during discriminative conditioning. Conditioned stimuli (CS, 1000 and 2500 Hz tones) were delivered through two miniature loudspeakers fitted to the head in front of both ears. The unconditioned stimulus (US) was an electrical stimulation of either the left or right lateral hypothalamus yielding, in addition to its rewarding effects, an unconditioned head turning response (UR) either to the left, right, forwards or upwards. Discrimination learning appeared as mor…

El Montepío del Colegio de Abogados de Valencia
2002
Lesion of areas 17/18/19: effects on the cat's performance in a binary detection task
1988
The ability of two cats to discriminate between two geometrical outline patterns in the presence of superimposed Gaussian visual noise — i.e. in a binary detection task — was tested before and after bilateral removal of cortical areas 17, 18 and 19. The detection probability PD was measured as a function of the signal-to-noise ratio. After a lesion of areas 17, 18 and 19 both cats were unable to carry out the discrimination tasks. Their detection performance dropped to chance level, but after an extensive phase of retraining (3 months) they regained the ability to discriminate visual patterns. It was thus possible to obtain detection curves and to determine a measure of a performance which …
Are simple striate cells analysers of visual signals both in spatial position as well as in spatial frequency?
1984
According to a modern view, simple cells of the cat striate cortex are considered to operate as apart of Fourier analysis system thus leading to the idea that the operational mechanism of the visual cortex is concerned with the analysis of spatial frequencies. Nevertheless if simple cells are really concerned only with the analysis of spatial frequencies there should exist a strict relationship between their spatial frequency selectivity and the spatial organization of their receptive fields. This is because it is the spatial organization of the spatial frequency detector i.e. the cell's receptive field that determines the cell's spatial frequency selectivity. Since the quantitative analysi…
Conditioned orienting (alpha) and delayed behavioral and evoked neural responses during classical conditioning
1989
A differentiation of short-latency (alpha) and long-latency (delayed) classically conditioned behavioral and evoked neural (hippocampal) responses was attempted. Further, facilitation and retardation of these responses were studied in an experimental design in which 10 paired conditioning sessions either preceded (CC-CO group) or followed (CO-CC group) 10 randomly unpaired presentations of conditioned stimuli (CS) and unconditioned stimuli (UCS). A 2024-ms tone (1000 Hz) was delivered directly through a miniature earphone to the left ear, eliciting an orienting head movement ('alpha' response) to the left. The unconditioned stimulus (UCS) was a direct 1024-ms stimulation of the lateral hypo…
Dynamics and interactions of parvoviral NS1 protein in the nucleus
2007
Summary Nuclear positioning and dynamic interactions of viral proteins with nuclear substructures play essen- tial roles during infection with DNA viruses. Visual- ization of the intranuclear interactions and motility of the parvovirus replication protein (NS1) in living cells gives insight into specific parvovirus protein- cellular structure interactions. Confocal analysis of highly synchronized infected Norden Laboratory Feline Kidney cells showed accumulation of nuclear NS1 in discrete interchromosomal foci. NS1 fused with enhanced yellow fluorescence protein (NS1- EYFP) provided a marker in live cells for dynamics of NS1 traced by photobleaching techniques. Fluo- rescence Recovery after…
