Causal Inference and Statistical Fallacies

2001

Fallacies are defined as plausible-seeming arguments that give the wrong conclusion. The article concentrates on those with some connection with causality. The classical definition of causality involving a necessary and sufficient condition for an effect is rejected and three possible definitions discussed. The first is that of a statistical association that cannot be explained away as the effect of admissible alternative features. To make this more precise, Markov graphical representations are introduced and the important distinction between pairs of variables on an equal footing and those in a potential explanatory-response relation described. The roles of unobserved confounders and of ra…

A Dialectical Reading of Dynamic Systems Theory : Transcending Socialized Cognition and Cognized Social Dualism in L2 Studies

2016

Dynamic systems theory (DST) has affordances to be a quintessential metatheoretical architecture for the nuancing of the time-locked mechanisms and processes of the L2 system. The received construal of DST in L2 studies presumes the emergence of structural regularities and the cognitive organization of the L2 system as simply a function of lower-level language use in social milieux. Critiquing some of the bedrock assumptions anchoring the extant reading, this article sketches a complementary dialectical construal of DST. Explicating circular causality, a nexus of causality types, and self-organizational emergence and their attendant implications for an adequate description and explanation o…

Economic development and the creative industries: a tale of causality

2014

Cultural and creative industries are thought to be a driver for economic growth. During the last decade, research has tried to link higher intensity of these industries with the region's welfare. However, this is a controversial relationship that still needs to be proved. In this article, we build a conceptual framework to help us test the possible causality between regional income generation and employment in the cultural and creative sectors. Using regional European data for 1999–2008, our results show that there is a significant feedback (bidirectional causality) between the per capita GDP and employment intensity in the cultural and creative industries, allowing us to conclude that ther…

The role of blood DNA methylation in environment-related chronic disease: a biostatistical toolkit

2013

The foundations of decision theory: An intuitive, operational approach with mathematical extensions

1985

A new axiomatic basis for the foundations of decision theory is introduced and its mathematical development outlined. The system combines direct intuitive operational appeal with considerable structural flexibility in the resulting mathematical framework.
