Abstract The objective of this work is to study the influence of cavitation on the corrosion behaviour of Alloy 31, a highly-alloyed austenitic stainless steel (UNS N08031), in a LiBr heavy brine solution (992 g/L) at 25 °C. The presence of cavitation shifted the OCP value towards the active direction by 708 mVAg/AgCl, increased anodic current densities and passivation current density, ip, and reduced the pitting potential, Ep. Repassivation behaviour of Alloy 31 has been investigated by using potentiostatic tests at different potentials. A new nature of microporous architecture with hierarchical porosity and membrane template via high strain rate collision

Abstract This paper presents the formation of an unusual porous structure at Al/Al interface joined by magnetic pulse welding. The porous structure consists of a hierarchical microporous architecture with pore size of less than 2 µm that represents more than 80% over the whole area, in which 38% of them are sub-micron size pores. It also exhibits ultra-thin wall, sufficiently thin enough to behave as an electron-transparent material with a wall thickness of 50 nm. Abstract Structural-hydraulic tests of the European Isotope Separation On-Line (EURISOL) neutron converter target mock-up, named MErcury Target EXperiment 1 (METEX 1), have been conducted by Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI, Switzerland) in cooperation with Institute of Physics of the University of Latvia (IPUL, Latvia). Wavelet analysis of experimental results for coupled structural–hydraulic behavior of the EURISOL target mock-up

During test runs of the The European Isotope Separation On-Line (EURISOL) target mock-up performed in December 2008, data were recorded for strain gages and for acceleration sensors. In this paper, the applicability of wavelet analysis for detecting the onset and the status of flow-induced cavitation is investigated for the first time. Even under noisy conditions, the detection of incipient cavitation was possible when combining measurements with data from structural and fluid dynamic simulations. Toward a density functional description of liquid pH2.

A finite-temperature density functional approach to describe the properties of parahydrogen in the liquid-vapor coexistence region is presented. The first proposed functional is zero-range, where the density-gradient term is adjusted so as to reproduce the surface tension of the liquid-vapor interface at low temperature. The second functional is finite-range and, while it is fitted to reproduce bulk pH2 properties only, it is shown to yield surface properties in good agreement with experiments. Algorithms for a finer description of cavities in continuous media and for a more efficient selection of sampling points on the cavity surface are described. Applications to the evaluation of solute surface and volume and to the calculation of the solute-solvent electrostatic interaction energy, as well as of the cavitation energy are shown as examples.

The cavitation corrosion behaviour of commercially pure Grade 2 titanium in a 992 g/l LiBr solution has been investigated at 25 °C using an ultrasound device. Cavitation was found to have more influence on the anodic branch than on the cathodic branch, shifting the corrosion potential, Ecorr, and the OCP value towards more negative potentials, and increasing the corrosion current density, icorr, by six times. The repassivation kinetics of Grade 2 titanium have also been studied in the 992 g/l LiBr solution, at 25 °C and various applied potentials, using cavitation to damage the electrode surface. Relations between cavitation erosion resistance of materials and their fatigue strength under random loading

Abstract The paper contains results of tests on fatigue strength under uniaxial random loading and cavitation erosion resistance for three steels: 10HNAP, 18G2A and 15G2ANb. The obtained fatigue and cavitation characteristics were used for determination of relations between these two phenomena. From the analysis it appears that there is correlation between fatigue strength of the material under random loading and its cavitation erosion resistance. It has been shown that fatigue tests under random loading and tests on cavitation erosion of 10HNAP, 18G2A and 15G2ANb steels may be described with a mathematical model of the same type.
