Oral leiomyoma in retromolar trigone : a case report
2007
Leiomyomas are bening tumours originated on smooth muscle. The most frequent site of appearance are uterine myometrium, gastrointestinal tract and skin. The highest incidence ocurs between 40 and 49 years of age. Its presentation is unusual in children or in older patients. Leiomyomas are unfrequent in the oral cavity, but in this location are usually localized on tongue, lips and palate. Leiomyomas use to appear as well-defined masses, with slow growth and totally asymptomatic. Pain is present just in rare cases. The treatment is surgical escision. Recurrences are extremely unfrequent. The diagnosis is mainly determined by histological studies due to its unspecific clinical appearance. His…
Cavity Control of Excitons in Two-Dimensional Materials
2018
We propose a robust and efficient way of controlling the optical spectra of two-dimensional materials and van der Waals heterostructures by quantum cavity embedding. The cavity light-matter coupling leads to the formation of exciton-polaritons, a superposition of photons and excitons. Our first principles study demonstrates a reordering and mixing of bright and dark excitons spectral features and in the case of a type II van-der-Waals heterostructure an inversion of intra and interlayer excitonic resonances. We further show that the cavity light-matter coupling strongly depends on the dielectric environment and can be controlled by encapsulating the active 2D crystal in another dielectric m…
Numerical prediction of ventilated planing flat plates for the design of Air Cavity Ships
2017
In recent years, a great world issue is the respect for the environment. Each researcher, in his competence field, proposes new technologies and new approaches in order to reduce the environmental impact of a product or of an industrial process. In the naval field, the main way in order to reduce the environmental impact of the ship during the navigation is the reduction of the drag resistance and so the reduction of requested power. There are many ways in order to obtain a reduction of drag. This paper investigates, with a preliminary numerical study by means of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), the Air Cavity Ships technology (ACS). A first part of the paper concerns the study of the ri…

Modulation of Forssman Glycosphingolipid Expression by Murine Macrophages: Coinduction with Class II MHC Antigen by the Lymphokines IL4 and IL6
1990
In contrast to murine spleen M phi, resident peritoneal M phi from health mice express very little Forssman glycolipid antigen (Fo). The following experiments suggest that Fo expression by peritoneal M phi may be associated with inflammation. Balb/c and CBA/J mice were given inflammatory stimuli by i.p. injection of live BCG, thioglycollate (TG), Corynebacterium parvum (CP), proteose peptone (PP), or LPS. Control animals received pyrogen-free saline. Expression of Fo and Ia antigen by peritoneal M phi was determined by immunofluorescence after 4 d. Application of TG or CP led to an up to 30-fold increase in Fo+, Ia+ double positive M phi over that in control animals. LPS caused mainly an in…
In vitro evaluation of the temperature increment at the external root surface after Er,Cr:YSGG laser irradiation of the root canal
2009
Objectives. A study was made to determine the temperature increment at the dental root surface following Er,Cr:YSGG laser irradiation of the root canal. Design. Human canines and incisors previously instrumented to K file number ISO 30 were used. Irradiation was carried out with glass fiber endodontic tips measuring 200 µm in diameter and especially designed for insertion in the root canal. The teeth were irradiated at 1 and 2 W for 30 seconds, without water spraying or air, and applying a continuous circular movement (approximately 2 mm/sec.) in the apico-coronal direction. Results. At the 1 W power setting, the mean temperature increment was 3.84ºC versus 5.01ºC at 2 W. In all cases the d…
Enhanced proinflammatory response to the Candida albicans gpi7 null mutant by murine cells.
2008
International audience; The Candida albicans gpi7/gpi7 null mutant strain (Deltagpi7), which is affected in glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI) anchor biosynthesis, showed a reduced virulence following systemic infection of C57BL/6 mice. In vitro production of TNF-alpha, IL-6 and IL-1beta by macrophages in response to Deltagpi7 cells was significantly increased as compared to control (wild type GPI7/GPI7 and revertant gpi7/GPI7) cells; this probably contributes to the enhanced recruitment of neutrophils to the peritoneal cavity in response to Deltagpi7 cells. Survival of knockout mice for Toll-like receptor (TLR) 2 and TLR4 following intravenous injection of Deltagpi7 cells showed no signifi…
Vascular Leakage in Severe Dengue Virus Infections: A Potential Role for the Nonstructural Viral Protein NS1 and Complement
2006
Background Vascular leakage and shock are the major causes of death in patients with dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) and dengue shock syndrome (DSS). Thirty years ago, complement activation was proposed to be a key underlying event, but the cause of complement activation has remained unknown. Methods The major nonstructural dengue virus (DV) protein NS1 was tested for its capacity to activate human complement in its membrane-associated and soluble forms. Plasma samples from 163 patients with DV infection and from 19 patients with other febrile illnesses were prospectively analyzed for viral load and for levels of NS1 and complement-activation products. Blood and pleural fluids from 9 patient…
Diagnostic and prognostic value of magnetic resonance imaging in the detection of tumor depth of invasion and bone invasion in patients with oral cav…
2022
To evaluate the accuracy of preoperative contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the assessment of radiological depth of invasion (rDOI) and bone invasion in patients with oral cavity cancer, and the prognostic value of preoperative rDOI.This retrospective study included patients with surgically resected oral cavity cancer and preoperative MRI acquired within four weeks before surgery. Two readers evaluated the MRI to assess the superficial and deep bone invasion, preoperative T stage, and measured the rDOI. The rDOI was compared to the histopathological DOI (pDOI), used as reference standard. Prognostic value of preoperative features for the disease-specific survival was eval…
Measurement of inflammatory mediators of mast cells and eosinophils in native nasal lavage fluid in nasal polyposis.
2001
Background: Nasal polyposis (NP) often coexists with asthma, rhinitis and sinusitis. Polyp histology typically shows chronic, eosinophilic inflammation. The inflammatory cell infiltrate generally includes eosinophils, lymphocytes, plasma cells and mast cells. Objective: To gain insight into the natural history of NP, we analysed mediator levels and leukocyte values in nasal fluids and eosinophil cationic protein (ECP), total IgE levels and eosinophils in the blood in several groups of both allergic and non-allergic patients with nasal polyps and in patients with allergic rhinitis (AR). Methods: Thirty-two patients with nasal polyps en…
