Juvenile ossifying fibroma of the maxillofacial region: analysis of clinico-pathological features and management

2021

Background The diagnosis and management of juvenile ossifying fibroma (JOF) remains a highly debated topic with paucity of studies with long-term follow-up, hence the aim of this study was to report on the clinico-pathological features and management of these neoplasms. Material and Methods A retrospective analysis was performed on all histopathologically confirmed JOF presenting at two tertiary hospitals in Cape Town, South Africa over a period of 39 years. Clinical, demographic, histopathological and radiological features were analyzed. Surgical methods were documented and a minimum post-operative follow-up of 12 months was a prerequisite. Results Seventeen patients met the inclusion crit…

Interobserver and intraobserver variability in the radiological assessment of sialolithiasis using cone beam computed tomography

2021

Background Data regarding the inter- and intraobserver variability in the radiological assessment of sialolithiasis using cone beam computed tomography are missing in the current literature. This study assessed the inter- and intraobserver variability in the radiological assessment of sialolithiasis using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). Material and Methods In 107 patients, 130 salivary glands (65 parotid and 65 submandibular) with clinical signs of obstruction were assessed by four independent observers; 2 residents OMFS and 2 experienced OMFS. The observers analyzed the CBCT images and determined the absence or presence of one or more salivary stones in the affected gland. This proc…

CBCT in the diagnosis of osteonecrosis of the jaws

2013

Short Summary: ONJ is associated with bisphosphonates, and recently with antiangiogenic drugs. Another cause is radiotherapy. Few papers have previously investigated the value of CBCT in the diagnosis of ONJ. Purpose/Objectives: To describe the CBCT findings in the diagnosis of osteonecrosis of the jaws (ONJ) according to a new staging system of ONJ. Methods and Materials: 9 patients (5 women, 4 men, 54-76 yrs.) affected by ONJ were studied with a CBCT device (90 kV, 12.5 mA, 0.25 mm voxel size) in 2012-2013. 7/9 patients were treated with bisphosphonates (5 for bone metastasis, 2 for osteoporosis), 1/9 patient was treated with an antiangiogenic drug, 1/9 patient received radiotherapy. Pati…

Wilson maxillary curve analyzed by cbct a study on normocclusion and malocclusion individuals

2013

The anatomy of dental compensation curve in the frontal plane described by George H. Wilson is one of the occlusal determinants of orthodontic treatment. However, there is few published comparing malocclusion and normocclusion individuals. Objectives: The aim of this study is to compare the curve of Wilson at first and second maxillary molars, normocclusion pattern and malocclusion pattern, with and without bilateral posterior crossbite, using angular references in CBCT studies. Material and Methods: We analyzed 10 cases of malocclusion with bilateral posterior crossbite, 10 cases of malocclusion without bilateral posterior crossbite and 10 cases with non orthodontic normocclusion (patients…

Comparison of condylar position in normal occlusion, Class II Division 1, Class II Division 2 and Class III malocclusions using CBCT imaging

2021

Background The aim of this study was to establish the condylar position in a group of patients with normal occlusion, compared to Class II Div 1, Class II Div 2 and Class III malocclusions using CBCT imaging. Material and Methods Retrospective case-control study carried out by analyzing CBCT images of 80 patients. The sample was divided into 4 different groups with 20 patients each (40 TMJ). All patients were positioned using the Frankfurt plane, parallel to the floor and in maximum intercuspation. The control group included asymptomatic patients with normal occlusion (Less than 2mm of tooth size-arch length discrepancy, positive or negative, 0-2mm overjet, 2-4mm overbite, less than 15o rot…

Classification of impacted mandibular third molars on cone-beam CT images

2014

Background: Neurological involvement is a serious complication associated to the surgical removal of impacted mandibular third molars and the radiological investigation is the first mandatory step to assess the risk of a possible post-operative injury to the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN). The aim of this study was to introduce a new radiological classification that could be normally used in clinical practice to assess the relationship between an impacted third molar and mandibular canal on cone beam CT (CBCT) images. Material and Methods: CBCT images of 80 patients (133 mandibular third molars) were independently studied by three members of the surgical team to draw a classification that co…
