Sicilian semi- and supercentenarians: identification of age-related T cell immunophenotype to define longevity trait

2023

: The immunophenotype of oldest centenarians, i.e., semi- and supercentenarians, could provide important information about their ability to adapt to factors associated with immune changes, including ageing per se and chronic Cytomegalovirus infection. We investigated, by flow cytometry, variations in percentages and absolute numbers of immune cell subsets, focusing on T cells, and pro-inflammatory parameters in a cohort of 28 women and 26 men (age range 19-110 years). We observed variability in hallmarks of immunosenescence related to age and Cytomegalovirus serological status. The eight oldest centenarians showed the lowest percentages of naïve T cells, due to their age, and the highest pe…

The application of genetics approaches to the study of exceptional longevity in humans: Potential and limitations

2012

Abstract The average life-span of the population of industrialized countries has improved enormously over the last decades. Despite evidence pointing to the role of food intake in modulating life-span, exceptional longevity is still considered primarily an inheritable trait, as pointed out by the description of families with centenarian clusters and by the elevated relative probability of siblings of centenarians to become centenarians themselves. However, rather than being two separate concepts, the genetic origin of exceptional longevity and the more recently observed environment-driven increase in the average age of the population could possibly be explained by the same genetic variants …

Centenarians and diet: what they eat in the Western part of Sicily.

2012

Abstract This paper pays attention to the modifiable lifestyle factors such as diet and nutrition that might influence life extension and successful ageing. Previous data reported that in Sicily, the biggest Mediterranean island, there are some places where there is a high frequency of male centenarians with respect to the Italian average. The present data show that in Sicani Mountain zone there are more centenarians with respect to the Italian average. In fact, in five villages of Sicani Mountains, there were 19 people with an age range of 100–107 years old from a total population of 18,328 inhabitants. So, the centenarian number was 4.32-fold higher than the national average (10.37 vs. 2.…

Myocardial Infarction in Centenarians. Data from The Polish Registry of Acute Coronary Syndromes

2020

Background: There are no data regarding the mortality rate, risks and benefits of particular reperfusion methods and pharmacological treatment complications in patients aged over 100 years with acute coronary syndromes. We sought to assess the treatment of myocardial infarction (MI) in patients older than 100 years and to determine prognostic factors for this group. Methods: Among the 716,566 patients recorded between 2003 and 2018 in the Polish Registry of Acute Coronary Syndromes, 104 patients aged &ge

Centenarian offspring: A model for understanding healthy aging

2018

Centenarians exhibit extreme longevity showing a compression of morbidity. We showed previously that microRNA expression profiles and plasma protein carbonylation in centenarians and young people are similar, whereas they are very different from that found in old individuals. This suggests that centenarians have a better control of homeostasis and are protected against oxidative damage. In this study, we aimed to determine if such characteristic microRNA expression profile and lower protein oxidation status in centenarians may be inherited by their offspring. For this purpose, we collected plasma and peripheral blood mononuclear cells from 90 septuagenarians, 68 centenarians and 46 centenar…

Ernesto Basile e l'ampliamento di Palazzo Montecitorio

2018
