Spectrum cartography using adaptive radial basis functions: Experimental validation

2017

In this paper, we experimentally validate the functionality of a developed algorithm for spectrum cartography using adaptive Gaussian radial basis functions (RBF). The RBF are strategically centered around representative centroid locations in a machine learning context. We assume no prior knowledge about neither the power spectral densities (PSD) of the transmitters nor their locations. Instead, the received signal power at each location is estimated as a linear combination of different RBFs. The weights of the RBFs, their Gaussian decaying parameters and locations are jointly optimized using expectation maximization with a least squares loss function and a quadratic regularizer. The perfor…

RNAi mediated acute depletion of Retinoblastoma protein (pRb) promotes aneuploidy in human primary cells via micronuclei formation

2009

BACKGROUND: Changes in chromosome number or structure as well as supernumerary centrosomes and multipolar mitoses are commonly observed in human tumors. Thus, centrosome amplification and mitotic checkpoint dysfunctions are believed possible causes of chromosomal instability. The Retinoblastoma tumor suppressor (RB) participates in the regulation of synchrony between DNA synthesis and centrosome duplication and it is involved in transcription regulation of some mitotic genes. Primary human fibroblasts were transfected transiently with short interfering RNA (siRNA) specific for human pRb to investigate the effects of pRb acute loss on chromosomal stability. RESULTS: Acutely pRb-depleted fibr…

Diagnostic validity of the Merrill Palmer-R Development Scale used in the evaluation of access to Child Development Centers and Early Care

2019

The Merrill Palmer-R Development Scale is commonly used in Child Development and Early Care Centers. It is usually used, like other scales, in the initial evaluation process at the time of discharge in the center and / or throughout the entire intervention. The results obtained in the application of the scale are presented in the University Center of Diagnostic and Early Care of the University of Valencia, in the period between 2011 and 2016. In total, 223 cases of children under 42 months have been analyzed. Most of them, or without diagnosis or with a provisional diagnosis at the time of discharge. The objective of this article is to determine the diagnostic value of the Merrill Palmer-R …

Speech Activity Detection under Adverse Noisy Conditions at Low SNRs

2021

Speech originating from the noisy environments degrades the speech quality and intelligibility, thus reducing the human perceived Quality of Experience (QoE). For example, surveillance using drone during natural catastrophe needs an efficient speech recognition device to recognise the speech of the frozen human in presence of drone noise to save their life. Therefore, it often requires to pre-process the noisy speech in order to reduce the noise artifacts and enhance the speech. This paper detects the speech activity using Voice Activity Detection (VAD). The VAD distinguishes speech activity (speech presence) and speech inactivity (silence/noise) by extracting the speech features and compar…

p38 MAPK activation is required for Paracentrotus lividus skeletogenesis

2008

We investigated the p38 MAPK role during sea urchin, Paracentrotus lividus, development. We found that at the morula stage, before the onset of skeletogenesis, p38 MAPK shows a peak of activity, and we tested whether p38 MAPK activity has any effect on skeletogenesis. By immunohistochemistry on whole-mount embryos we show the preferential localization of the active p38 form both in the presumptive PMCs and bilateral spiculo- genesis centers in control embryos, and in the radialized supernumerary spiculogenesis centers induced by NiCl2 treatment. By using SB203580, a p38 MAPK specific inhibitor, we show that p38 activity is required both for the initial triradiate spicule rudiments formation…

ANTIMICROBIAL AND ANTISTAPHYLOCOCCAL BIOFILM ACTIVITY FROM THE SEA URCHIN PARACENTROTUS LIVIDUS

2009

Aims: Staphylococcal biofilm-associated infections are resistant to conventional antibiotics. Consequently, new agents are needed to treat them. With this aim, we focused on the effector cells (coelomocytes) of the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus immune system. Methods and Results: We tested the activity of the 5-kDa peptide fraction of the cytosol from coelomocytes (5-CC) against a group of Gram-positive, Gram-negative bacteria and fungi. We determined minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) ranging from 253.7 to 15.8 mg ml(-1). We observed an inhibitory activity and antibiofilm properties of 5-CC against staphylococcal biofilms of reference strains Staphylococcus epidermidis DSM 3269 an…
