Pietro Mengoli and the six-square problem

The aim of this paper is to analyze a little known aspect of Pietro Mengoli's (1625-1686) mathematical activity: the difficulties he faced in trying to solve some problems in Diophantine analysis suggested by J. Ozanam. Mengoli's recently published correspondence reveals how he cherished his prestige as a scholar. At the same time, however, it also shows that his insufficient familiarity with algebraic methods prevented him, as well as other Italian mathematicians of his time, from solving the so-called “French” problems. This article proposes a study of the traditions in defensive architecture that concurred in the projects designed by Spanish military engineers for the fortification of the Valencian frontier in 1648 and 1649, in the context of the War of Catalonia (1640-1652). For this it is essential to follow the route of the Valencian adaptations to the military revolution in the matter of fortifications throughout the sixteenth century and compare them with those brought to Valencia in 1641 by the Marquis of Leganes and his engineers from the school of Milan.

Vidzeme, one of the cultural and historical regions of Latvia, became a part of the kingdom of Sweden during the 17th century. Subsequently, Swedish cartographers mapped the estates of Vidzeme and then compiled maps of larger territories then called castle districts. The present research inspects 11 of these late 17th century maps and analyzes the microtoponyms found there. For an illustration, the maps of Sāviena (Sawensee) and Aburti (Lüggen) estates are chosen. This paper consider as microtoponyms not only the names of meadows, forests, swamps and hills, but also some hydronyms denoting smaller rivers and lakes that had not yet been academically analyzed, in total names of 26 objects. A series of documents helps to define the history of the genesis of an eighteenth-century church façade in Sicily: the church of San Giovanni in Vizzini. The history reveals a constant change of intentions and an empirical approach where, without necessarily proceeding to demolish the already built, the project is subjected to continuous revisions and additions. The process therefore reveals a radical alternative to the idea of an orderly succession between drawing and execution.
Lutheran Clergy in an Orthodox Empire. The Appointment of Pastors in the Russo-Swedish Borderlands in the 18th Century

The history of the parishioners’ right to participate in and influence the choice of local clergy in Sweden and Finland can be taken back as far as the late Medieval Times. The procedures for electing clergymen are described in historiography as a specifically Nordic feature and as creating the basis of local self-government. In this article the features of local self-government are studied in a context where the scope for action was being modified. The focus is on the parishioners’ possibilities and willingness to influence the appointment of pastors in the Lutheran parishes of the Russo-Swedish borderlands in the 18th century.
