Application of Environmental Management Systems (EMS) to Natural Parks and reserves

2006

Natural parks and reserves have to face problems concerning the conservation of their natural resources. Citizens and firms often perceive the institution of new protected areas more as a bind or a restriction to their activities than an added value of the territory. Following the principles of sustainable development, it is necessary to integrate the environmental protection with the needs of neighbouring urban areas and production sites. The implementation of an Environmental Management System (EMS) according to international standards (ISO 14001, EMAS) can support the Park administration in their complex management activities. This paper analysed the criticisms related to the application…

Municipal Building Regulations for Energy Efficiency in Southern Italy

2014

The building sector is still one of the most energy consuming sectors in Italy, like developed countries in Europe. At European level, the main policy driver related to the energy use in buildings is the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD, 2002/91/EC) and its recast. Through the EPBD in- troduction, requirements for certification, inspections, training or renovation are now imposed in Member States. In order to fulfill the expected changes, local regulations are a key factor aiming at sustainable territorial planning. It is thus required support the issue of local rules at municipal level in order to guide local administrators and technicians and to limit discretional power of …

Demand Response Service Certification and Customer Baseline Evaluation Using Blockchain Technology

2020

The use of Distributed Ledger Technologies such as Blockchain for certifying Demand Response services allows for the creation of a distributed system in which customers can communicate with the system operator to provide their flexibility, in a secure, transparent and traceable way. Blockchain technology also supports incentive mechanisms for users taking part in the service through the generation of utility tokens to recognize the user's contribution. This paper presents the experimental test of a novel methodology for Demand Response programs implementation by using the Blockchain technology. The latter is employed for defining a distributed Demand Response service and a new system for it…

The Public-Key-Infrastructure of the Radiological Society of Germany.

2005

Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) encoding is based on the Public-Key-Procedure and permits the safe transmission of medical data. Furthermore it allows the use of an electronic signature provided that keys used belong to the key owner and that the key owner's identity is guaranteed by a trusted third party. Under the auspices of the Radiological Society of Germany (Deutsche Rontgengesellschaft, DRG) its IT-Working Group (Arbeitsgemeinschaft fur Informationstechnik, @GIT) built up an appropriate Certification Authority including the required Public-Key-Infrastructure. These @GIT certified PGP keys allow the legal use of telemedicine in Germany. Digital signatures based to those certified keys corre…

Dietary Glycaemic Index Labelling: A Global Perspective

2021

The glycaemic index (GI) is a food metric that ranks the acute impact of available (digestible) carbohydrates on blood glucose. At present, few countries regulate the inclusion of GI on food labels even though the information may assist consumers to manage blood glucose levels. Australia and New Zealand regulate GI claims as nutrition content claims and also recognize the GI Foundation’s certified Low GI trademark as an endorsement. The GI Foundation of South Africa endorses foods with low, medium and high GI symbols. In Asia, Singapore’s Healthier Choice Symbol has specific provisions for low GI claims. Low GI claims are also permitted on food labels in India. In China, there are no nation…

Is certification for sustainable tourism complementary to ISO 9000 certification? The case of the Parque del Lago Hotel in Costa Rica

2011

The value of this paper lies in the fact that it provides a comparative analysis between ISO 9000:2000 standards and the Costa Rica CST sustainability standard. It aims to obtain di…

Impact of ethical certifications and product involvement on consumers decision to purchase ethical products at price premiums in an emerging market c…

2021

AbstractIn emerging markets, instances of increasing consumers focus on ethical aspects of the product are observed. To this end, we aim to examine the influence of two ethical certifications and two product involvement types on consumers willingness to purchase ethical products at price premiums in the Indian market. No animal cruelty certification and no child labor certification are chosen as the ethical certifications, and a shirt and a bar of soap are chosen as high and low involvement product categories. Data is collected from 206 respondents for the experiment, in which consumers willingness to purchase a product is evaluated for different product scenarios. The results of the study …

+++

For four consecutive years the evolution of yea…

Tentative Reflections on Construction of Assessment Models for Buildings’ Sustainability Certification

2017

All over the word several rating systems have been produced to certificate the sustainability level of buildings. Experts agree on considering sustainability a typical field for multicriteria decision analysis, but buildings’ rating systems do not comply in a consistent manner this assessment approach. Proposals for using classical and hybrid ranking procedures are aimed to quantify the relative attractiveness of buildings, but do not give information on their absolute attractiveness. While several studies propose suitable application of multicriteria decision making techniques for assessing buildings’ sustainability with the purpose of choosing the best solution or obtaining a ranking on a…
