Conservative Management for Odontoid Cervical Fractures: Halo or Rigid Cervical Collar?

2016

Odontoid fractures are the most common fractures of the cervical spine, especially in the elderly. They account for approximately one third of cervical spine fractures, and with the aging of the world population, the incidence and clinical and social relevance of such pathology are likely to increase. Odontoid fractures may occur from high-energy mechanisms, particularly in younger patients, but low-energy trauma may be the causative factor in the geriatric population. Overall, the treatment of patients with odontoid process fractures is based on the type of the fracture, patient's health status, age, association with neurologic deficits, and personal preference of the surgeon. Relative ind…

Physical Examination Tests for Screening and Diagnosis of Cervicogenic Headache: A Systematic Review

2016

It has been suggested that differential diagnosis of headaches should consist of a robust subjective ex-amination and a detailed physical examination of the cervical spine. Cervicogenic headache (CGH) is a form of headache that involves referred pain from the neck. To our knowledge, no studies have sum-marized the reliability and diagnostic accuracy of physical examination tests for CGH. The aim of this study was to summarize the reliability and diagnostic accuracy of physical examination tests used to diagnose CGH. A systematic review following PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines was performed in four electronic databases (MEDLINE, Web of …

Knowledge about infection with human papillomavirus: a systematic review.

2007

Abstract Objective. Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a necessary cause of cervical cancer and genital warts. The aim of this systematic literature review was to provide an overview of knowledge about HPV infection among the public, students, patients and health professionals. Method. PubMed searches were performed and the results of studies were reported by age, gender, study population, country, recruitment score and year of study conduct. The recruitment score covered the mode of recruitment, study size and response rate. Results. We included 39 studies published between 1992 and 2006 covering a total of 19,986 participants. The proportion of participants who had heard of HPV varied from 13%…

Pineal 'synaptic' ribbons in sympathectomized rats.

1989

The melatonin metabolism in the mammalian pineal gland is under the clear influence of sympathetic fibers originating in the superior cervical ganglia (SCG). Previous studies suggested that also pineal ‘synaptic’ ribbons (SR) are regulated by the gland’s sympathetic innervation. To gain more insight into the mechanisms involved SR numbers were determined in adult rats which were chemically sympathectomized as newborns by injection of 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA). In control animals (saline injections), a clear day/night difference in the number of SR is present. In sympathectomized animals SR are higher in number throughout the 24-hour cycle but are not significantly elevated at night. The pr…

Transperitoneal versus extraperitoneal laparoscopic aortic lymph nodal staging for locally advanced cervical cancer: A systematic review and meta-ana…

2021

Abstract Cervical cancer is the fourth most common neoplasm in women. In locally advanced cervical cancers, the international guidelines recommend nodal aortic assessment. Two techniques have been described to perform laparoscopic aortic lymphadenectomy: transperitoneal laparoscopic lymphadenectomy (TLL) and extraperitoneal laparoscopic lymphadenectomy (ELL). This meta-analysis aims to compare the surgical outcomes of TLL and ELL for staging purposes. The systematic review was carried out in agreement with the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses statement (PRISMA). Two hundred and twenty studies were analyzed, and 19 studies were included in the review (7 for …

Trend of hospitalized cases of oral cancer in Brazil and its relationship with oral health coverage in public health system between 2009 and 2017

2020

Background This study aimed to analyze the trend in the number of hospitalized cases of oral cancer in Brazil, according to the coverage of oral health services in public health system, and also investigate the influence of healthcare and clinical characteristics on the severity of oral cancer cases. Material and Methods This retrospective study considered the period between 2009 and 2017. Data from the Hospital Registry of Cancer from the National Cancer Institute were used, considering the primary locations C00 to C06. Detailed information including sex, age, alcohol and tobacco use, year of first consultation, and the clinical stage of the cases were also collected. The frequency of hosp…

Cervical Motion Preserving Procedures (TDR)

2019

Symptomatic cervical degenerative disc disease leading to radiculopathy is a common problem with an incidence of 0.83–1.79 per 1.000 person years. While many episodes of radicular symptoms can be successfully managed by conservative therapy, patients with refractory symptoms or a significant paresis are candidates for a surgical treatment. However, different surgical techniques are available to treat cervical degenerative disc disease, as anterior cervical discectomy without fusion, anterior cervical discectomy with fusion or posterior foraminotomy. Anterior cervical discectomy with fusion as described in the 1960’s (Chap. 3) is currently regarded as the gold standard. Although ACDF provide…

Overview of Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery

2020

Minimally invasive spine surgery (MISS) has continued to evolve over the past few decades, with significant advancements in technology and technical skills. From endonasal cervical approaches to extreme lateral lumbar interbody fusions, MISS has showcased its usefulness across all practice areas of the spine, with unique points of access to avoid pertinent neurovascular structures. Adult spine deformity has also recognized the importance of minimally invasive techniques in its ability to limit complications and to provide adequate sagittal alignment correction and improvements in patients' functional status. Although MISS has continued to make significant progress clinically, consideration …
