During a die-off of Mediterranean striped dolphins Stenella coeruleoalba in 1990-91, 82 individuals stranded on the Spanish coast were examined for crustacean ectoparasites and epizoites. Six species were detected: Syncyarnus aequus, PenneUa sp., Xenobalanus globicipitis, Conchoderma virgatum, Lepas pectinata and Lepas cf. hillii. The barnacles L. pectinata and L. cf. hillii are reported here for the first time on cetaceans; they were attached to the teeth. C. virgaturn was also found on the teeth; this is an unusual attachment on cetaceans. Infected osteoradionecrosis (IORN) is a severe complication of radiation therapy for head and neck cancer. Infected osteoradionecrosis can lead to fracture and often requires subsequent jaw resection. It is known that irradiated bone is highly susceptible to infections, mainly with Candida species and cariogenic bacteria. Only very few data exist on Actinomyces in IORN. Abstract Infected osteoradionecrosis (IORN) is one of the major complications of oral cancer radiotherapy. Recent studies showed a high prevalence of Actinomyces in IORN. In this study, the clinical follow up of IORN patients ( n = 25; 20 male, 5 female) with regard to Actinomyces detection in the mandible was analyzed. Within 1.6–119 months of follow up, disease control was achieved in almost 90% of the patients with Actinomyces -negative bone biopsies, but only in 25% of the Actinomyces -positive group. During parasitological investigations of long-finned pilot whales,Globicephala melaena (Traill, 1809), in the Faroe Islands, the trematode speciesOdhneriella subtila (Digenea: Campulidae), parasitising the small intestine, was detected. Skrjabin's (1959) original description of this species was based on a single individual. The collection and availability for study of several thousands of specimens permitted the redescription of this campulid and the noting of some new morphological characters. This trematode is reported for the first time from the long-finned pilot whale, and the Atlantic Ocean is a new locality record.
Gephyromycin, the first bridged angucyclinone, from Streptomyces griseus strain NTK 14

The new, highly oxygenated angucyclinone gephyromycin was isolated from an extract of a Streptomyces griseus strain. Its unprecedented ether-bridged structure was elucidated by NMR methods and substantiated by single crystal X-ray analysis. The absolute configuration was evidenced by quantum chemical CD calculations. Gephyromycin exhibits glutaminergic activity towards neuronal cells. Furthermore, the known compounds fridamycin E and dehydrorabelomycin were identified.

The causes of cetacean stranding and death along the Catalan coast between 2012 and 2019 were systematically investigated. Necropsies and detailed pathological investigations were performed on 89 well-preserved stranded cetaceans, including 72 striped dolphins Stenella coeruleoalba, 9 Risso’s dolphins Grampus griseus, 5 bottlenose dolphins Tursiops truncatus, 1 common dolphin Delphinus delphis, 1 Cuvier’s beaked whale Ziphius cavirostris and 1 fin whale Balaenoptera physalus. The cause of death was determined for 89.9% of the stranded cetaceans. Fisheries interaction was the most frequent cause of death in striped dolphins (27.8%) and bottlenose dolphins (60%).
