Serotonin N-acetyltransferase (NAT), which is crucial for the formation of melatonin, undergoes a typical day/night rhythm in the pineal gland with low levels during daytime and high levels at night. Short pulses of light given at night have been shown to rapidly depress NAT activity in some species, but not in others, the reasons for this difference being unclear. The metabolism of 0.19 and 2.0 mM-[3-14C]coumarin to polar products and covalently bound metabolites has been studied with hepatic microsomes from the rat, Syrian hamster, Mongolian gerbil and humans. [3-14C]Coumarin was metabolized by liver microsomes from all species to a number of polar products and to metabolite(s) that became covalently bound to microsomal proteins. The polar products included 3-, 5- and 7-hydroxycoumarins, o-hydroxyphenylacetaldehyde and o-hydroxyphenylacetic acid. Coumarin 7-hydroxylation was observed in all species except the rat. Therefore, measurements were performed to find out whether the photosensitiser Photofrin® is taken up differently in malignant and non-malignant cells in vitro . Pixel-to-pixel correlation between images of absolute ATP concentrations and blood flow in tumours

Iodo(14C-)antipyrine autoradiography and imaging bioluminescence have been combined to obtain pixel-to-pixel correlations between absolute values for local blood flow and ATP concentrations at a microscopical level within designated areas in hamster melanomas. Positive pixel-to-pixel correlations were obtained in 4 of 6 tumours. Both flow and ATP values were less in mostly necrotic than in mostly viable tumour regions. The data provide evidence for the energetic state of cancer cells being strongly influenced by the efficiency of tumour microcirculation in several but not in all malignancies investigated. Using literary and iconographic sources the paper discusses the image of kētos from Antiquity to Middle Ages. The kētos, according with Greek literature, was used in the myths of both Perseus and Andromeda and Heracles and Hesione. The archaic images of the sea-monster are identifiable on Corinthian vases, on which we have only heads of leonine form. From 5th century the classical type of kētos is distinguished from all other Greek sea-monsters by a long neck, fins (also like wings), long muzzle and corrugated upper surface (like a crocodile), and leonine forelegs. Rodents are the most abundant group of small mammals occurring in Brisighella deposits. They are represented by 12 species in total, among which 2 hamsters (Apocricetus cf. barrierei and Ruscinomys cf. lasallei), 2 dormice (Muscardinus sp. and Myomimus sp.), 1 porcupine (Hystrix (Hystrix) depereti), 2 sciurids (Atlantoxerus cf. rhodius and Hylopetes sp.) and 5 species of muridae (Apodemus cf. gudrunae, Centralomys benericettii, Occitanomys sp, Paraethomys meini and Stephanomys debruijni). This association suggests a relatively dry open environment, interrupted by forest environment with more or less dense underground.
