Food allergy in gastroenterologic diseases: Review of literature

2007

Food allergy is a common and increasing problem worldwide. The newly-found knowledge might provide novel experimental strategies, especially for laboratory diagnosis. Approximately 20% of the population alters their diet for a perceived adverse reaction to food, but the application of double-blind placebo-controlled oral food challenge, the “gold standard” for diagnosis of food allergy, shows that questionnaire-based studies overestimate the prevalence of food allergies. The clinical disorders determined by adverse reactions to food can be classified on the basis of immunologic or nonimmunologic mechanisms and the organ system or systems affected. Diagnosis of food allergy is based on clini…

Abstract Background and aims GP-TCM is the 1st EU-funded Coordination Action consortium dedicated to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) research. This paper aims to summarise the objectives, structure and activities of the consortium and introduces the position of the consortium regarding good practice, priorities, challenges and opportunities in TCM research. Serving as the introductory paper for the GP-TCM Journal of Ethnopharmacology special issue, this paper describes the roadmap of this special issue and reports how the main outputs of the ten GP-TCM work packages are integrated, and have led to consortium-wide conclusions. How Can We Assess the Perception of Induced Dyspnea in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease?

2004

Objective TO evaluate various methods for studying the perception of dyspnea in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) using a new parameter, the change in Borg scale rating, and others already in use: the linear regression slope and the application of Stevens' law to the response-perception curve-ie change in forced expiratory volume in 1 second (ΔFEV 1 )-change in dyspnea (Adyspnea). Patients and method A bronchial challenge test was performed on 70 patients with stable COPD and no contraindications for performing the test (European Respiratory Society criteria), during which dyspnea was measured (Borg scale) after each nebulization. Perception was analyzed using: a ) the linear reg…

How are learning experiences and task properties associated with adolescents’ emotions and psychophysiological states?

2022

We examined whether learning experiences (value of success, mastery experience) and task properties (challenge) are related to early adolescents’ (n = 190, median age = 12) emotional responses and psychophysiological states (autonomic nervous system, ANS) in achievement situations in an ambulatory laboratory. They completed four achievement tasks (two math and two reading) at different challenge levels in randomized order, and reported their learning and task perceptions for each task. The proportion of errors indicated the objective demandingness of each task. As indices of sympathetic nervous system activity, we recorded skin conductance response (SCR) and heart rate (HR), and, as parasym…

2020

Positive thinking constitutes one of the great traditions that lead to the idea of the subject as an entrepreneur of himself and is perhaps one of the best that has successfully condensed cultural, political, social and pedagogical processes linked to reflection on well-being in this historical time. The teaching work is especially moved by the pregnancy of these perspectives that challenge the pedagogical field and the education workers as ?agents of change, or at least one more school available to give the discussion on well-being and happiness (yours and the students?) is celebrated and encouraged. 2014

Key Challenges of Virtual Software Development Teams

2010

Montonen, Jarno Johannes Key Challenges of Virtual Software Development Teams / Jarno Montonen Jyväskylä: Jyväskylä University, 2010. 41 p. Bachelor’s Thesis Many alleged benefits of virtual teams have motivated software companies to utilize virtual work in their projects. Building efficient virtual teams has, however, proven out to be a difficult task, and companies have found out that the alleged benefits may not always come true. To ease the efficient utilization of virtual teams in the future software development projects, this study researches virtual software development literature for key challenges that the teams face, as well as to find possible solutions to these challenges. The s…

Challenge types in gaming validation of video game challenge inventory (CHA)

2020

Challenge is a key motivation for videogame play. But what kind of challenge types videogames include, and which of them players prefer? This article helps to answer the above questions by developing and validating Videogame Challenge Inventory (CHA), a psychometrically sound measurement for investigating players’ challenge preferences in videogames. Based on a review of literature, we developed a 38-item version of CHA that was included in a social media user survey (N = 813). An exploratory factor analysis (EFA) revealed a latent structure of five challenge types: Physical, Analytical, Socioemotional, Insight, and Foresight. CHA was amended in another EFA with USA-based survey data (N = 5…

Organisational Challenges for School Development and Improvement : The Obstructing Role of Sub-Groups and an Overly Positive School Culture

2020

The purpose of this study has been to identify and analyse obstacles embedded in the school organisation that impede organisational development and improvement. The general findings show that the school structure comprised sub-groups and had characteristics of a diversified organisation. This led to dysfunctional discussions that challenged school development and improvement. Second, the findings revealed that the nature of the school culture may challenge school development processes. Positive features of the school culture, such as engagement, good relationships and high self-esteem might deter the effectiveness of the schools, e.g. the schools’ ability to prioritise and improve the pupil…
