Analysis, assessment and quantification of the climate changes impact: the resilience silvicultural indicators
2017
Sicilian forests can be considered at high decay risk because of more and more frequent wildfires and, even more, because of climate change effects, like floods, draught, heat waves, snow and wind storms. They are worrying processes, contributing at making ecosystems weaker and intensifying the potential desertification risk in Sicily, one of the most threatened of Italian regions by this form of soil degradation. The most effective approach to mitigate the effects of the climate change has been developed through the following action: analysis, assessment and quantification of the climate change impact: the silvicoltural resilience indicators.
Seasonal changes in size, sex-ratio and body condition of the damselfishChromis chromisin the central Mediterranean Sea
2014
Chromis chromisis one of the most abundant fish species on the Mediterranean rocky shores. Acting as a by-pass of nutrients from the pelagic to the rocky littoral system, it plays an important role as a resource provider and has a relevant function in the community assemblage.Chromis chromishas many of the characteristics required of an indicator species (e.g. it is easy to recognize in the field, small sized, widespread and abundant). In this study we focused on individual size, sex-ratio and body condition in a damselfish population occurring in a central Mediterranean marine protected area. Fishing trials on a monthly basis (April–November) allowed us to assess seasonal changes in popula…
Genetic polymorphisms and epigenetics changes in human metabolizing enzymes genes to predict differential therapeutic drug effects
2013
It has been understood that genetic variability can influence individual ability to metabolize drugs (Kiyohara C. et al., 2002). In particular, sequence changes into some genes give to subject a variable capability to response to a therapy protocol, to begin a resistance toward therapeutic drugs or, on the contrary, to be more sensible to it: the genes of CYP-family, CYP2A6 and CYP2E1, are good examples. Nevertheless, gene expression can be affected either by DNA sequence mutations (polymorphisms) or by “epigenetic modifications”, such as DNA methylation of a CpG islands in a gene promoter ion (Zhu J. et al., 2009). For these reasons, it is indispensable, today, to integrate genetic analyse…

Detecting hydrological changes through conceptual model
2015
Natural changes and human modifications in hydrological systems coevolve and interact in a coupled and interlinked way. If, on one hand, climatic changes are stochastic, non-steady, and affect the hydrological systems, on the other hand, human-induced changes due to over-exploitation of soils and water resources modifies the natural landscape, water fluxes and its partitioning. Indeed, the traditional assumption of static systems in hydrological analysis, which has been adopted for long time, fails whenever transient climatic conditions and/or land use changes occur. Time series analysis is a way to explore environmental changes together with societal changes; unfortunately, the not disting…
New data on Sicilian prehistoric and historic evolution in a mountain context, Vallone Inferno (Scillato, Italy)
2013
Vallone Inferno rock-shelter is an archaeological site located in the Madonie mountain range in Sicily. Archaeological excavation and research have provided a long prehistoric and historic sequence from the Neolithic to the medieval period, this being the most complete work in this area at present. In this paper we present the preliminary data provided by a multidisciplinary study based on pottery, lithic, human, faunal and plant remains. Stratigraphic studies have identified four complexes, of which complex 3 has provided almost all the archaeological remains. 14C AMS dates, obtained from four samples, place the human activities between 2601 cal BC and 644 cal AD. These dates are coherent …

In this book the author investigates the digital image proliferation of our times from an interdisciplinary point of view.
Social Media and Crowd Diagnosis
2022
The chapter aims at exploring social media platforms as used by individuals to obtain (first or second) opinions in the form of crowd-diagnosis (Nobles et al. 2019) within a social media-critical discourse study (SM-CDS, KhosranoviNik 2018a) perspective. This study explores the communicative ‘territory’ of medical history presentation and, more particularly, it reports results on the communicative skills used by online users to present their own history and design it as challenging. To this end, this work adopts a critical discourse-based perspective on the language used for history-giving. I shall focus on the communicative resources which are employed by patients to be ‘visible’ at the in…
Die vielgestaltige Wassermetaphorik bei Yoko Tawada
2018
The famous German-Japanese author Yoko Tawada lives since 1982 in Germany, where she writes in Japanese and German. This essay examines the multiform metaphor of water in the works of the writer. Furthermore, the study explores the apparently close relations between water, with its continuous changes, and the existence of a fixed identity. This paper also questions how water (a metaphor for identity) in many passages of the selected texts, is sought and rejected but also feared, desired and modified by the protagonists.
Tempo e ragione nella determinazione all’agire libero. Coordinate di orientamento
2013
The topic of the essay is the relationship between time and pure practical reason in the Kant’s Theory of the free determination of the will. We ask if the orientation of the free will to the moral law implies a specific orientation in time, in which the subject can get the sense of the absolute and urgent rational obbligation to the freedom. We analyse the dinamical aspect of the pure reason on the intermediete normative level of the maxims. We research in which kind of reference points in time are the conditions of possibility of the subversion of the empirical causality, of the turn of the subjective principles’ order, of the Revolution in Conduct of Thought. Furthermore temporal referen…
