La complessità del paesaggio agrario del “giardino mediterraneo” a partire dalla tavola di Alesa

2014

The Mediterranean is characterized by landscapes as result from long and complex historical processes in a varied environment. An identification and clarification of the role of the “Mediterranean Garden” (MG) in the Traditional Mediterranean Landscape (TML) is necessary. The MG is often associated with numerous different agricultural landscapes, due to the long historical process that has led to their identification. This paper identifies the characteristics of the MG’s landscape, starting from a historical overview of Sicily. What emerges is the structural, compositional and functional character of these traditional landscapes and systems, which is complex, multipurpose and often with mix…

Riesz fractional integrals and complex fractional moments for the probabilistic characterization of random variables

2012

Abstract The aim of this paper is the probabilistic representation of the probability density function (PDF) or the characteristic function (CF) in terms of fractional moments of complex order. It is shown that such complex moments are related to Riesz and complementary Riesz integrals at the origin. By invoking the inverse Mellin transform theorem, the PDF or the CF is exactly evaluated in integral form in terms of complex fractional moments. Discretization leads to the conclusion that with few fractional moments the whole PDF or CF may be restored. Application to the pathological case of an α -stable random variable is discussed in detail, showing the impressive capability to characterize…

Meristic character analysis and skeletal anomalies during growth in reared sharpsnout seabream

2000

Sharpsnout seabream (Diplodus puntazzo) is a species currently reared in Mediterranean fish farms. In order to detect the main types of body deformation in sharpsnout seabream. 120 specimens (60 juveniles and 60 adults) taken from a Mediterranean hatchery were examined. In juveniles and adults non-significant differences were found in the number of vertebrae, dorsal spines and pectoral fin rays. Moreover, the number of anomalies varied with age. The juveniles presented 28 types of anomaly, the adults 25. The most important anomalies for juveniles (in terms of frequency of occurrence) were anomalous neural arch or spine (47%), anomalous hemal arch or spine (43%), fusion of hypurals (67%) and…

CCD characterization and measurements automation

2012

Abstract Modern mosaic cameras have grown both in size and in number of sensors. The required volume of sensor testing and characterization has grown accordingly. For camera projects as large as the LSST, test automation becomes a necessity. A CCD testing and characterization laboratory was built and is in operation for the LSST project. Characterization of LSST study contract sensors has been performed. The characterization process and its automation are discussed, and results are presented. Our system automatically acquires images, populates a database with metadata information, and runs express analysis. This approach is illustrated on 55 Fe data analysis. 55 Fe data are used to measure …

15. Spectroscopic methods applied to zircon

2003

Natural and synthetic (pure and doped) zircon (ZrSiO4) have been studied with a variety of spectroscopic techniques. These techniques are based on different physical phenomena, for instance transitions between spin states of nuclei and electrons, energetic transitions of valence electrons, intra-molecular vibrations, or vibrations of atoms and molecular units in the lattice. All of the diverse spectroscopic techniques, however, have in common that they probe energy differences between a ground and excited states, mostly upon interaction of the mineral with incident radiation. Such interactions are not only determined by the excited elementary particles or molecules themselves but depend gre…

"La ocasión": una novela en el eje de la vacilación

2014

This paper aims to analyze Juan Jose Saer’s narrative strategy in the novel "La ocasion". The author takes over some of the characters belonging to Argentinian collective imagination –who are national mythts–, what allows him to show the pampas as a misty and insurmountable mythical place. The especial mapping of plain he draws is not only a geographic framework in which the landowner, the gaucho or immigrant face both the environment and the otherness. This may be understood as a metaphor of man’s general condition. From a Lacanian orientation, the second part of this article examines the configuration of the main character from its central theme: spirit-matter dichotomy.

Shining castles and humans of metal/floral appearance ? metaphorical language in the Palaiologan romances Kallimachos and Velthandros

2019

About eight centuries after Heliodorus, the Greek novel resurfaced in the twelfth century, in Komnenian Byzantium, and again two centuries later under the Palaiologan dynasty. This latter literary revival was due to the political stability of the imperial Byzantine government, which promoted cultural production, rhetorical education, and patronage networks. Kallimachos and Velthandros, two Palaiologan romances presented as court literature, combine ancient and medieval tropes with rhetorical artistry to blur the boundaries between the artificial and the natural. Castles and objects made of precious metals thus resemble living, natural spaces, and human characters are portrayed in metallurgi…
