Six Para-Philosophical Exercises in Latvian Euro(Onto)Poiesis

2000

The following essay is intended to search for a new framework for the history of Latvian philosophy as a normal ingredient of an“essentially non-existent” Mid-European philosophy. The character of such“nonexistent” philosophy is determined by the particular geo-politico-psycho-graphical anamnesis of Europe’s body. I believe the most important (therefore, submerged in amnesia) points of its anamnesis are the two world wars, through which the First Republic of Latvia emerged, then perished, and is being reborn nowadays. But, it is well known that philosophy has nothing to do with the“first birth”, i.e. with birth from external causes; philosophy can be created only after a“second birth”. To o…

Characterization of Orlicz–Sobolev space

2007

We give a new characterization of the Orlicz–Sobolev space W1,Ψ(Rn) in terms of a pointwise inequality connected to the Young function Ψ. We also study different Poincaré inequalities in the metric measure space.

Reaching Out to the Europeans. Political Parties’ Facebook Strategies of Issue Ownership and the Second-Order Character of European Election Campaigns

2020

The European Election campaign 2019 enjoyed heightened attention in the European and global public due to the recent emergence of populist actors, new parties, and large European issues such as immigration, climate change, and Brexit. Starting theoretically from the issue ownership theory, shareworthiness, and the second-order character of European elections, the study at hand investigates the campaigns of 69 parties from 9 countries on Facebook as one of the current central spheres of electoral contest. Facebook enables parties to provide users with selected issues considered advantageous for themselves. The number of posts’ shares indicates whether the parties manage to reach out to the v…

Polish Jokes about Americans

2004

The objective of the present paper is to analyze the character of Polish jokes about Americans and to find out what these jokes say about Poles. The latter question results from the assumption that stereotypes reveal more about those who propagate them than about those who allegedly represent particular traits. The popularity of Americans is a certain novelty in contemporary Polish jokes and this fact could be interpreted as another element in the processes of so-called McDonaldization. The texts are presented by the chronology of events they refer to. Americans are perceived by Poles as the enemies of the Russians, and so as a positive protagonist, a symbol of the high standard of living a…

The Serial Character of Abolition: Charting Transatlantic and Gendered Critiques of Slavery in The Liberty Bell

2019

This chapter discusses the editorial work of the female abolitionist Maria Weston Chapman and examines how Chapman envisions the gift book—a collection of poetry, short fiction, essays, and letters designed to be given away as present to a loved one—as a transatlantic space in which political thinkers, writers, and intellectuals could exchange their ideas. In order to enhance the dialogical endeavor of the gift book The Liberty Bell (1839–1859), Chapman makes strategic use of seriality by employing, for example, repeated iconography and cross-references that link contributions in each volume but also the individual volumes with each other. This chapter thus examines how the serial character…

On the Reduction of Power Consumption in Vortexing Unbaffled Bioslurry Reactors

2020

Bioremediation of polluted soils via bioslurry reactors is an interesting option among those available nowadays, especially when recalcitrant pollutants are present. Vortexing unbaffled stirred tanks may be a valuable choice to this purpose as they were recently found to be more efficient than baffled vessels for solid suspension processes where mixing time is not a controlling factor. When operated at sufficiently high agitation speeds, the central vortex bottom reaches the impeller and air bubbles start to be distributed throughout the system, thus avoiding any sparger and related clogging issues. In the present work, a vortexing unbaffled stirred tank with solid loadings ranging from 2.5…

CHARACTERIZATION OF VOLATILE ORGANIC COMPOUNDS AND ODOUR POLLUTION IN ATMOSPHERE AT OIL AND GASOLINE HANDLING AND PROCESSING IMPACT ZONE

2019

Air quality pollution problem is still one of the crucial points for citizens in Europe for already receiving increasing attention, particularly because of the major European cities 10 and more years. Although the EU's long-term goal is to achieve levels of air quality that do not impact and risks to human health and the environment, many of member states still didn`t reach stated goals. Additionally, to gaseous pollutants, recently specific type of pollution, - odour, seems to become more important. Usually in order to determine pollution levels, national, municipal and private monitoring equipment is used. For this research municipal monitoring site in Riga (Latvia), at Milgravja Street 1…

Strategies for the rapid characterization of metals and organic pollutants in solid wastes and contaminated soils by using mass spectrometry

1998

Abstract Hyphenated techniques involving mass spectrometry (MS) such as ICP-MS, GC–MS and LC–MS are the most powerful tools for both qualitative and quantitative characterization of metals and organic pollutants in previously dissolved or extracted samples. However a considerable analytical effort is required in developing simple and general sample preparation strategies for the complete characterization of toxic substances in solid wastes and soils. This article gives a critical review of the state-of-the-art and future perspectives for rapid procedures to evaluate the pollution of soils and sediments, also considering new alternatives like flow injection analysis–MS and direct sampling MS.

Multidisciplinary Approach for Evaluating the Geochemical Degradation of Building Stone Related to Pollution Sources in the Historical Center of Napl…

2020

Natural stones have represented one of the main building materials since ancient times. In recent decades, a worsening in degradation phenomena related mostly to environmental pollution was observed, threatening their conservation. The present work is focused on the minero-petrographic and geochemical characterization of black crust (BC) samples taken from the historical center of Naples, after selecting two pilot monumental areas. The latter were chosen based on their historical importance, type of material, state of preservation and position in the urban context (i.e., high vehicular traffic area, limited traffic area, industrial area, etc.). The building materials used and their interact…
