Ag2 and Ag3 clusters: synthesis, characterization, and interaction with DNA.

2015

Subnanometric samples, containing exclusively Ag2 and Ag3 clusters, were synthesized for the first time by kinetic control using an electrochemical technique without the use of surfactants or capping agents. By combination of thermodynamic and kinetic measurements and theoretical calculations, we show herein that Ag3 clusters interact with DNA through intercalation, inducing significant structural distortion to the DNA. The lifetime of Ag3 clusters in the intercalated position is two to three orders of magnitude longer than for classical organic intercalators, such as ethidium bromide or proflavine. Atomic and electronic structure of gold clusters: understanding flakes, cages and superatoms from simple concepts.

2008

Atomic structure and electronic structure are intimately interrelated properties of nanoclusters and nanoparticles, defining their stability, electronic, optical and chemical properties, in other words, their usability as potential components for nanoscale devices. This tutorial review attempts to describe the development in understanding the structures of bare and ligand-protected gold clusters over the past decade, based on selected density-functional-theory calculations. This review should be of interest both to newcomers in the field and to an interdisciplinary community of researchers working in synthesis, characterization and utilization of ligand-protected gold clusters.

Links and Bifurcations in Nonsingular Morse–Smale Systems

1997

Wada's theorem classifies the set of periodic orbits in NMS systems on S3 as links, that can be written in terms of six operations. This characterization allows us to study the topological restrictions that links require to suffer a given codimension one bifurcation. Moreover, these results are reproduced in the case of NMS systems with rotational symmetries, introducing new geometrical tools.

The Effects of Individual Characteristics of the Naval Personnel on Sleepiness and Stress during Two Different Watchkeeping Schedules

2022

Background: Naval service can have a significant impact on the wellbeing of seafarers, and the operation of warships is highly dependent on the personnel on board. Nevertheless, there is a lack of knowledge concerning the impact of seafarers’ individual characteristics on their wellbeing in a naval environment. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate individual characteristics of the naval personnel that may be associated with the amount of sleepiness, fatigue and stress responses experienced during shift work and irregular working hours in a naval environment. Methods: The study took place on a Finnish Defence Forces’ Navy missile patrol boat on which 18 crewmembers served as s…

The Dunkl–Williams constant, convexity, smoothness and normal structure

2008

Abstract In this paper we exhibit some connections between the Dunkl–Williams constant and some other well-known constants and notions. We establish bounds for the Dunkl–Williams constant that explain and quantify a characterization of uniformly nonsquare Banach spaces in terms of the Dunkl–Williams constant given by M. Baronti and P.L. Papini. We also study the relationship between Dunkl–Williams constant, the fixed point property for nonexpansive mappings and normal structure.

Selective oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane over SnO2-promoted NiO catalysts

2012

[EN] Ni-Sn-O mixed oxides catalysts have been investigated for the oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane. The catalysts were prepared through the evaporation of aqueous solutions of nickel nitrate and tin oxalate and finally calcined in air at 500 degrees C for 2 h. These materials have been characterized by several techniques (N-2-adsorption, X-ray diffraction, High-Resolution Electron Microscopy, temperature programmed reduction, X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, Fourier Transformed Infrared Spectroscopy of adsorbed CO and O-18/O-16 isotope exchange). The addition of just a tiny amount of tin highly increases the selectivity to ethylene (from ca. 40% to 80-90%). Thus, high selectivity to et…

Motivational strategies in interventions for intimate partner violence offenders: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled tria…

2020

ABSTRACT Previous research suggests that the inclusion of motivational strategies in interventions for intimate partner violence (IPV) offenders could increase their effectiveness. This review evaluated the effectiveness of interventions for IPV offenders that includes motivational strategies to reduce physical and psychological IPV, treatment dropout, official recidivism to IPV offending, and to increase intervention attendance dose. The present systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted using PRISMA guidelines. The following databases were searched from 1983 to 2018 for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of interventions for IPV offenders that incorporated motivational strategies…

Mechanisms of the national character stereotype: How people in six neighbouring countries of Russia describe themselves and the typical Russian

2009

Altogether, 1448 individuals from six neighbouring countries of Russia in the Baltic Sea region (Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Belarus) described a ‘typical’ member of their own nation and a ‘typical’ Russian, as well as rated their own personality, using the National Character Survey (NCS). Results suggest that national character stereotypes are widely shared, temporally stable and moderately related to assessed personality traits, if all assessments are made using the same measurement instrument. In all studied countries, agreement between national auto‐stereotypes and assessed personality was positive and in half of the samples statistically significant. Although membe…
