The spatial porosity and mineral distribution of geological materials strongly affects transport processes in them. X-ray micro computed tomography (X-mu CT) has proven to be a powerful tool for characterizing the spatial mineral distribution of geological samples in 3-D. Speed control of the V2 skating technique in elite cross-country skiers

The aim was to examine how skiers control skiing speed using V2-skating. Subjects skied with three submaximal and maximal speeds on 100 m 4° uphill. Cycle variables and force parameters form the arms and legs were analysed. Cycle rate increased up to the maximum speed. Cycle length increased from the slowest speed to the all other speeds. Pole force and delta leg force increased up to the maximum speed. Ranges of motions and angular velocities of kick flexion and extension with knee and hip joints increased till highest submaximal speed. Seismic tomography tests applied to a gravity dam

The control of the safety assessment of a dam is largely dependent on knowledge of the mechanical parameters of the actual construction, as well as its geological substratum. The application of geophysical methods can be used in existing dams to evaluate the materials (strength properties) and to verify if they match design expectations, as well as to contribute to the safety control. In particular seismics methods can considerably contribute to the examination indicating the less consolidated material and the degradation of mechanical parameters. Synthesis and self-assembly of a PEGylated-graphene aerogel

Abstract In the frame of this work, we present, for the first time, the synthesis and self-assembly of an aerogel built by graphene oxide-polyethylene glycol. The synthetic route involves at first the coupling of GO with an amino-terminated polyethylene glycol sample by carbodiimide in aqueous environment, and the subsequent conversion of the hydrogel achieved into an aerogel via freeze-drying. The 3D PEGylated graphene-based aerogel, characterized by spectroscopic, morphological, structural and mechanical analyses, displays an ultralight and highly porous (99.7%) network and possesses high mechanical properties together with a good biocompatibility.

Synthesis and characterization of ethylene-1-hexene copolymers prepared by using MgCl2(THF)2-supported Ziegler-Natta catalysts

Ethylene was copolymerized with 1-hexene over vanadium (VOCl3 and VCl4) and titanium (TiCl4) catalysts supported on MgCl2(THF)2 and activated with Et2AlCl. So far these catalyst systems have not been known as initiators of ethylene-1-hexene copolymerization. The vanadium catalysts were more active than the titanium catalyst and, at identical comonomer concentrations in the feed, gave rise to a greater incorporation of 1-hexene into the copolymer. Even at relatively low fractions of 1-hexene, the MgCl2(THF)2-supported catalysts affected much the copolymer properties like density, melting point and crystallinity.
