It has been proposed that self-esteem buffers threat-responding. The same effect is ascribed to the vagus nerve, which is a primary nerve of the parasympathetic nervous system. Consequently, it has been suggested that self-esteem and cardiac vagal tone are interconnected on a trait, as well as on a state, level. In this study, we examined the relationship of vagal cardiac control and self-esteem fluctuations across a single day using ecological momentary assessment. <i>Objective:</i> Osteoporosis (OP), osteoarthritis (OA) and vitamin D deficiency are age-related disorders. We investigated the association between bone mineral density (BMD), vitamin D and OA in patients undergoing total hip or knee replacements. <i>Method:</i> In total, 82 women and 35 men with mean ages of 70 and 68 years, respectively, were recruited for the study. When muscle is artificially activated, as with electromyostimulation (EMS), action potentials are evoked in both intramuscular nerve branches and cutaneous receptors, therefore activating spinal motoneurons reflexively. This clinical study analyzed gender-specific relationships of depression with other psychopathological and clinical variables in hospitalized patients with schizophrenia. During clinical routine treatment 119 inpatients with acute schizophrenia (DSM-IV) were investigated with the Calgary Depression Rating Scale for Schizophrenia (CDSS), the Clinical Global Impressions (CGI), and the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS).
