Study abroad and career identity : three narratives of English language students' journeys to English-speaking countries

2010

Kulttuurienväliset opiskelijavaihto-ohjelmat ovat kasvattaneet merkittävästi suosiotaan kuluneiden vuosikymmenten aikana. Kuitenkin vasta viime vuosina on herätty tutkimaan millaisia kokonaisvaltaisia vaikutuksia kulttuurirajojen ylittämisellä sekä vieraaseen kieli- ja kulttuuriympäristöön sopeutumisella on vaihto-opiskelijoiden identiteetille. Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on tarkastella seuraavaa kysymystä: millaisia vaikutuksia kansainvälisellä opiskelijavaihdolla on opiskelijan ammatilliselle identiteetille. Tutkielman aineisto on kerätty temaattisella ryhmähaastattelulla. Siinä kolme opiskelijaa kertoo opiskelijavaihtonsa aikaisista kieli- ja kulttuurikokemuksista sekä pohtii identit…

Efficacy and safety of ramucirumab (RAM) for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with elevated alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) following first-line soraf…

2019

Abstract Background REACH (NCT01140347) and REACH-2 (NCT02435433) were two global, randomized, double-blind, placebo (PL)-controlled multicenter, phase 3 studies of RAM vs PL in patients with HCC after prior sorafenib. REACH-2 confirmed overall survival (OS) benefit of RAM for patients with baseline AFP ≥400ng/mL, consistent with results in a prespecified subgroup of patients in REACH with AFP ≥400ng/mL. Methods Post-hoc pooled analyses were performed to examine efficacy and safety in three age subgroups ( Results Both intention-to-treat populations were pooled (542 patients in total). Within each age subgroup, baseline characteristics between treatment arms were similar. Patients of Conclu…

Integrated urban water modelling with uncertainty analysis

2006

In the last twenty years, the scientific world has paid particular care towards the problems that involve the environment. Accordingly, several researches were developed to describe phenomena that take place during both wet and dry periods and to increase the knowledge in this field. In particular, attention was addressed towards the problems linked with receiving water body pollution because of the impact of rain water in the urban environment. In order to obtain a good description of the problem, it is important to analyse both quantity and quality aspects connected with all the transformation phases that characterise the urban water cycle. Today, according to this point, integrated model…

Iron enrichment from hypoxic hypolimnion supports the blooming of Raphidiopsis raciborskii in a tropical reservoir.

2022

Occurring worldwide, blooms of Raphidiopsis raciborskii threaten the use of water resources especially in tropical and subtropical waterbodies. Its high flexibility in the uses of light and macronutrients (C, N, P) frustrates any bloom prediction and control based on macronutrients regulation. To identify the critical factors promoting periodic blooms of R. raciborskii, the trends of meteorological, hydrodynamic, physical, and chemical variables (including macro- and micronutrients: N, P, Fe) were analyzed in a Chinese tropical large reservoir (Dashahe reservoir) over five years. It was hypothesized that Fe availability, mediated by the mixing pattern of the reservoir, played a crucial role…

Some properties of local weighted second-order statistics for spatio-temporal point processes

2019

Diagnostics of goodness-of-fit in the theory of point processes are often considered through the transformation of data into residuals as a result of a thinning or a rescaling procedure. We alternatively consider here second-order statistics coming from weighted measures. Motivated by Adelfio and Schoenberg (Ann Inst Stat Math 61(4):929–948, 2009) for the temporal and spatial cases, we consider an extension to the spatio-temporal context in addition to focussing on local characteristics. In particular, our proposed method assesses goodness-of-fit of spatio-temporal models by using local weighted second-order statistics, computed after weighting the contribution of each observed point by the…

Dimensions of household food waste focused on family and consumers

2020

Food waste produced in homes represents the largest fraction of food waste generated along the food chain. Therefore, adequate prevention measures based on the quantitative and qualitative dimensions of the problem need to be put in place to reduce waste. The objective of the review was to identify areas of interest in relation to the food waste in households, considering the family unit as a whole as well as individual family members. Quantifying the problem is an important aspect in order to know its scope and dimension, but prevention also involves knowing the causes in a home. This is a complex issue, which, on a family level, is related to socioeconomic status, educational level, compo…

Mutual Trust between Kindergarten Teachers and Mothers and its Associations with Family Characteristics in Estonia and Finland

2011

Mutual trust between mothers and kindergarten teachers along with its relation to mother’s educational level and child’s gender was studied in two neighboring countries—Estonia and Finland. From Estonia 543 ratings of mothers and 232 ratings of teachers were collected, and, from Finland, 712 ratings of mothers and 712 ratings of teachers. Trust was assessed with shortened questionnaires based on the Trust scale. More Finnish than Estonian mothers reported a higher level of trust towards the teacher while no significant difference was found for teachers. The associations between the level of mothers’ and teachers’ trust and mother’s education were different in each country.

The family in Italy: Cultural changes and implications for treatment

2012

In Italy family is characterized by strong ties and is based on mutual aid of all its members. In the last 20 years, the structure of families has been significantly influenced by demographic, economic and professional changes, determining a transition from a patriarchal to a nuclear family model, with a higher number of single-parent families, single-person households, childless couples, same-sex couples. However, this transition has been slower than that occurring in other countries, probably as an ongoing impact of prevalent Catholic ideology. Major demographic changes in Italian families include, 1) a decrease in the number of marriages, delays in getting married and an high number of c…

Genetic study of the production of sexually dimorphic cuticular hydrocarbons in relation with the sex-determination gene transformer in Drosophila me…

2002

In Drosophila melanogaster, the main cuticular hydrocarbons (HCs) are some of the pheromones involved in mate discrimination. These are sexually dimorphic in both their occurrence and their effects. The production of predominant HCs has been measured in male and female progeny of 220 PGal4 lines mated with the feminising UAS-transformer transgenic strain. In 45 lines, XY flies were substantially or totally feminised for their HCs. Surprisingly, XX flies of 14 strains were partially masculinised. Several of the PGal4 enhancer-trap variants screened here seem to interact with sex determination mechanisms involved in the control of sexually dimorphic characters. We also found a good relationsh…

Intimate partner violence and perinatal health: a systematic review

2019

Background Physical, psychological, and sexual intimate partner violence (IPV) has been described in the literature as different types of IPV experienced by women during pregnancy all over the world. Objectives To review and summarise systematically the empirical evidence on the links between IPV during pregnancy and the perinatal health of mothers and fetuses/neonates. Search strategy MEDLINE (Ovid), CINAHL, Embase, Nursing@ovid (Ovid), and LILACS were performed (2008-2018). Selection criteria Observational studies that examined perinatal health outcomes (i.e. pre-term birth, low birthweight, miscarriage, perinatal death, and premature rupture of membranes) in pregnant women exposed to IPV…
