Sensor-Assisted Machining
2008
This chapter provides comprehensive knowledge regarding the application of various sensors and monitoring techniques to machining processes, cutting tools and machine tools. A number of monitoring methods used in manufacturing and relevant sensors are characterized. In particular, three most frequently used sensors, i.e., force, acceleration and acoustic emission, are presented and their characteristics and advantages are highlighted. The architectures of multiple-sensor tool-monitoring systems for detection of tool wear and breakage and collision for machine tools, including details of sensor fusion, signal processing and decision-making, are presented. Moreover, the concepts of sensor-bas…

Case study: Employing Agile Tools in Teaching Product Development to Mechatronics Students
2021
Agile tools such as Git are widely used in the industry for source control, collaboration and documentation. Such tools have been implemented in a mechatronic product development course to allow for easier collaboration between students. The course content is mainly provided using a GitLab Pages webpage which hosts software documentation and scripts. This course was first changed in 2019 to include the development of an autonomous strawberry picker. However, the use of standard learning management system and lecture slides provided a cumbersome experience for the students. Therefore, these agile tools were presented in 2020 version to improve the course. In this paper, the course content is…
A subspace based fault diagnose method and its application on mechatronics systems
2014
The mechatronics systems are widely used in modern society. This paper presents a novel data-driven scheme which can be used for fault diagnose of mechatronics systems. The proposed method is based on the subspace identification of parity vector. By constructing the output observer, critical variables can be acquired by soft sensors. This makes the fault diagnoses free from the limitation of online measurement. A diagnose observer is designed directly from the parity vector. Finally, the proposed scheme is tested by the Simulink benchmark of vehicle suspension and shows its good performance.
Multimodal user interface for a semi-robotic visual assistance system for image guided neurosurgery
2005
Abstract We developed a visual assistance system for image guided neurosurgery, consisting of a stereoscopic digital camera (exoscope) mounted on a semi-robotic manipulator. In order to minimize the operation time, the application-specific multimodal user interface enables hands-free manipulation of the exoscope. The surgeon wears thereby a head-mounted unit with a binocular display, a head tracker, a microphone and earphones. Different modes of view positioning and adjustment can be selected by voice and controlled by head rotation while pressing a miniature confirmation button mounted on a finger ring or suction device. Apart from the development of the mechatronic and software modules of…
Motion control systems for machine tools - a mechatronic approach by means of simulation
2008
Tuning the control parameters of the feed drives for existing state of the art CNC machine tools, or retrofitting obsolete machine tools requires a close understanding of the position control process. The use of a mathematical model of the feed drive, combined with a computer simulation process is needed in order to fulfill the above mentioned tasks. In this paper some simulation tools for studying the CNC motion control systems are presented. Both single axis positioning regime and biaxial linear and circular interpolation regime were taken into consideration. The main goal of the research was to offer a handson integrated simulation tools compatible and able to use for improving the perfo…
Eschatology and the Theory of Apocalypse
2019
This chapter centers on the role of myth-building and myths as the touchstone of culture and society. It deals with the idea that far from being silly stories, myths are a representational archetype that helps society to resolve practical problems or philosophical quandaries. Having said this, one might speculate that the scatology, which is understood as a tradition that narrates the end of the world, has occupied a central position in the industry of cultural entertainment. However, this obsession for the apocalypse theory seems to be proportionally indirect to the scientific studies in the field. This suggests not only the needs of discussing why the human will opposes the desires of God…
Influence of the Height of Municipal Solid Waste Landfill on the Formation of Perched Leachate Zones
2015
Waste settlement as well as consolidation phenomena, which occur inside a landfill for municipal solid waste (MSW), can cause a decrease in waste permeability. This can lead to a reduction in conveyance of the leachate drainage system. It is therefore possible that a so-called perched leachate zone will form. Such a zone is constituted by an area in the body of the landfill where the leachate is temporarily trapped and is unable to infiltrate downward. This phenomenon is influenced by many factors, which include rain infiltration rate, waste moisture and composition, landfill height, and so on. The main aim of the paper is to elucidate the role played by landfill height in the formation of …
Screening of physical–chemical methods for removal of organic material, nitrogen and toxicity from low strength landfill leachates
2002
Physical-chemical methods have been suggested for the treatment of low strength municipal landfill leachates. Therefore, applicability of nanofiltration and air stripping were screened in laboratory-scale for the removal of organic matter, ammonia, and toxicity from low strength leachates (NH4-N 74-220 mg/l, chemical oxygen demand (COD) 190-920 mg O2/l, EC50 = 2-17% for Raphidocelis subcapitata). Ozonation was studied as well, but with the emphasis on enhancing biodegradability of leachates. Nanofiltration (25 degrees C) removed 52-66% of COD and 27-50% of ammonia, the latter indicating that ammonia may in part have been present as ammonium salt complexes. Biological pretreatment enhanced t…
Weathering of gasification and grate bottom ash in anaerobic conditions
2009
Abstract The effect of anaerobic conditions on weathering of gasification and grate bottom ash were studied in laboratory lysimeters. The two parallel lysimeters containing the same ash were run in anaerobic conditions for 322 days, after which one was aerated for 132 days. The lysimeters were watered throughout the study and the quality of leachates and changes in the binding of elements into ash were observed. The results show that organic carbon content and initial moisture of ashes are the key parameters affecting the weathering of ashes. In the grate ash the biodegradation of organic carbon produced enough CO 2 to regulate pH. In contrast the dry gasification ash, containing little org…
