Assembled policies : the Finnish case of restricted entitlement to early childhood education and care

In this article, we utilize an application of Deleuze and Quattari’s (1987) concept of assemblage to explore and better understand the interconnectedness and materiality of the policies of early childhood education and care (ECEC). To exemplify how directing our focus to assemblages can further the understanding of policies in the everyday life of families, we will present a Finnish case of entitlement to ECEC. Tämä osaraportti esittelee Jyväskylän yliopiston yhteistyössä Terveyden ja hyvinvoinnin laitoksen (THL) kanssa toteuttaman Varhaiskasvatus ja koronapandemia -hankkeen kyselytutkimuksen perusteella noin viisivuotiaiden lasten hoito- ja varhaiskasvatusjärjestelyitä vuoden 2020 aikana. Hanketta rahoittaa Jyväskylän yliopiston osalta Opetus ja kulttuuriministeriö. The effective implementation of positive behaviour intervention and support (PBIS) requires both organisational and professional change. This means that the whole community including all educators and children commit to shared principles, practices, and structures to create a safe and supportive social climate. In this article, we investigate the initial implementation of the Finnish PBIS ProVaka in eighteen early childhood education and care (ECEC) centres. Studies have shown that, on average, children’s physical activity (PA) levels in early childhood education and care (ECEC) environments are low, thus opening up the possibility of interventions. We examined the effect of the teacher-implemented one-year long ‘home-and-childcare-based intervention to promote physical activity’ (HIPPA) study on children’s PA in ECEC settings in Finland. This ethnographic study examines intergenerational relations in a day-care center with extended opening hours. The theoretical starting points of the study draw on Michel Foucault’s concept of governmentality. Therefore, this dissertation aims to generate insights into intergenerational relations in a day care with extended hours from the viewpoint of governance. The data for the study were collected from one Finnish day-care class through observation and half- structured interviews. Teacher-child interactions as a context for developing social competence in toddler classrooms

The present study investigates the quality and variability of teacher-child interactions in relation to children’s social competence in Finnish toddler classrooms. The participants included 242 toddlers (114 girls, 128 boys) and their teachers (N= 42). The quality of teacher-child interactions (i.e., emotional and behavioral support; engaged support for learning) was observed using the CLASS-Toddler observation instrument (La Paro et al., 2012), and the average amount of within-day variability was calculated from the observed cycles. This article explores the language practices and choices of four teachers in a co-located kindergarten in Finland. Following Finland’s official bilingualism, the education system is built on two tracks –Finnish and Swedish. As official languages of Finland, the two languages share the same status, but since Finnish is the registered language of the vast majority of the population, Swedish can be seen as a de facto minority language –one reason why Swedish education has been seen as an important space for maintaining Swedish language and culture. Tässä tapaustutkimuksessa tarkastelemme, millainen käyttöteoria kaksikielistä pedagogiikkaa (suomi-ruotsi) varhaiskasvatuksessa toteuttavalla eksperttiopettajalla on eri kielten käytöstä monikielisten lasten kanssa toimiessa. Käyttöteorialla tarkoitetaan tässä pedagogista näkemystä, joka ohjaa opettajan toimintaa. Käyttöteoriaa eri kielten käytöstä lähestyttiin kahden tutkimuskysymyksen kautta, joissa tarkasteltiin kielikasvatuksen käyttöteorian keskeisiä osa-alueita ja niiden ilmenemistä eri kielissä.
