"Isässäni parasta on se, kun hän tekee hyvää ruokaa ja ostaa joskus uusia leluja minulle." : isä ja materia lasten kertomuksissa

2018

Isä on lapselle tärkeä.

Testing a physical education-delivered autonomy supportive intervention to promote leisure-time physical activity in lower secondary school students:…

2020

© 2020 The Author(s). Background: Inadequate physical activity in young people is associated with several physical and mental health concerns. Physical education (PE) is a potentially viable existing network for promoting physical activity in this population. However, little research has been conducted on whether PE teachers can influence students' engagement in leisure-time physical activity. The present study therefore examined the efficacy of an intervention aimed at increasing PE teachers' autonomy support on students' leisure-time physical activity (the PETALS trial). The intervention was guided by the trans-contextual model (TCM) explaining the processes by which PE teachers' provisio…

Children's perception of emotion in music : a cross-cultural study

2015

Previous research revealed that Western lullabies and children’s songs are mostly in the major mode, and children demonstrate a positive-major/negative-minor connotation that conforms to the conventional stereotype. The aim in this current study is to analyze the same topic in Finland and Iran where most lullabies are in the minor mode. The overarching question addressed is whether or not cultural background and the music mode, a child tends to be exposed to early in life affects later emotional responses to different music modes. Quantitative data was obtained from 5-8-year old children (n=44) and mothers (n=39) in mentioned countries. Background questionnaire and questions about twelve Fi…

What kind of values could be recognised in green messages, with special emphasis on children

2015

A lot of attention has been put on analysing why people behave in a certain way in many different aspects of life. Sustainability and environmental protection has started as early as in the 60s, but it was not until the early 90s that corporations showed serious attempts to turn towards greener business practices. Various researchers have highlighted the tremendous responsibility of companies and the role of marketing for a more sustainable society. Furthermore, it has been noted that values tend to be the base for environmental conduct, be it awareness, concern, worldview, attitude or behaviour itself. In general, it looks like that the more a person feels connected to nature, the less lik…

Asthma-Related Knowledge and Practices among Mothers of Asthmatic Children: A Latent Class Analysis

2022

Mothers’ knowledge about childhood asthma influences management practices and disease control, but validating knowledge/practice questionnaires is difficult due to the lack of a gold standard. We hypothesized that Latent Class Analysis (LCA) could help identify underlying mother profiles with similar knowledge/practices. A total of 438 mothers of asthmatic children answered a knowledge/practice questionnaire. Using answers to the knowledge/practice questionnaire as manifest variables, LCA identified two classes: Class 1, “poor knowledge” (33%); Class 2, “good knowledge” (67%). Classification accuracy was 0.96. Mothers in Class 2 were more likely to be aware of …

The feasibility of working memory tablet tasks in predicting scholastic skills in classroom settings

2019

Cognitive assessment in natural group settings facilitates data collection but poses threats to the validity. In this study, tablet‐based working memory (WM) tasks, the counting span, and reading span were used in predicting 12‐year‐old children's (N = 837) scholastic skills and fluid intelligence in a classroom with environmental noise. WM tasks had excellent internal consistency, correlated with scholastic skills, and accounted for more of the variance in cognitive performance (grade point average, fluid intelligence, scholastic skills) compared with individually administered (n = 190) digit span task. Furthermore, the multilevel analysis revealed that compared with the classrooms with no…

Prematurity and overlap between reading and arithmetic: The cognitive mechanisms behind the association

2019

It is well-known that very preterm children perform at lower levels than full-term children in reading and arithmetic at school. Whether the lower performance levels of preterm children in these two separate domains have the same or different origins, however, is not clear. The present study examined the extent to which prematurity is associated with the overlap (i.e., common variance) of reading and arithmetic among Finnish school beginners. We also examined the extent to which the association of prematurity with the overlap between reading and arithmetic is due to different prereading skills, basic number skills, and general cognitive abilities. The participants (age 6-7) consisted of 193…

School-based group intervention in attention and executive functions: Intervention response and moderators

2022

ObjectiveThis study investigated the effects of a school-based skill-training intervention in attention control and executive functions for pupils with hyperactivity-impulsivity (H-I) and cognitive control (CC) deficits. The main aim was to examine whether the intervention differently influenced H-I and CC, and whether cognitive abilities or conduct problems moderated response to the intervention.MethodElementary school pupils from 41 schools participated the study and were divided into an intervention group (n = 71) and a waitlist control group (n = 77). Intervention outcomes were assessed with an inventory assessing executive function difficulties (including H-I and CC) completed by class…
