A lattice of participation: reflecting on examples of children's and young people's collective engagement in influencing social welfare policies and …

2014

The article introduces four case studies from Wales, France and Finland and explores the situated, intergenerational and dynamic nature of collective participation in child welfare settings. Collective participation is conceived of as a process of engagement in which children and young people have some influence over the initiation or direction of a project; and as seeking a product, or outcome. The case studies represent a range of forms of collective engagement and highlight some key resources which supported children's participation (communicative spaces, time, money, knowledge, social position, attitudes, social networks, institutional commitment, equipment, food and transport). Challen…

Härmistetty kuolema: pelonhallintaa zombi-kuvakirjoissa

2018

Artikkeli tarkastelee zombikuvakirjojen tapoja käsitellä zombeissa ruumiillistuvaa rumaa ja väkivaltaista kuolemaa. Se keskittyy erityisesti tapoihin, joilla zombeihin liittyviä pelkoja pyritään kuvakirjoissa hallitsemaan. Kaunistavan, tieteellisiä selityksiä painottavan estetisoinnin lisäksi se tarttuu esteettisen härmistämisen käsitteeseen, eräänlaiseen naurettavaksi tekevään rumentamiseen, jonka se liittää taikauskoon ja kuvamagiaan. Vaikka esteettistä härmistämistä voidaan pitää animistisuudessaan jossain määrin primitiivisenä ja lapsellisena esitystapana, artikkeli esittää, että se on lopulta melko yleinen populaarikulttuurinen pelonhallinnan tapa. Alentaessaan ja karnevalisoidessaan y…

Exploiting children's literature in EFL teaching from the different learners' point of view : a differentiated teaching material package for fourth g…

2016

Kirjallisuuden hyödyntäminen kieltenopetuksessa Suomessa on ollut suhteellisen vähäistä. Kirjallisuuden käyttö kielten opetuksessa tarjoaa kuitenkin enemmän hyötyjä kuin haasteita. Kielen oppimisen lisäksi kirjallisuuden käytöllä voidaan edistää laajempia opetussuunnitelman mukaisia tavoitteita esimerkiksi ihmisenä kasvua. Uusi opetussuunnitelma velvoittaa kehittämään oppilaiden monilukutaitoa eri oppiaineissa, joten se mahdollistaa myös kirjallisuuden käytön kieltenopetuksessa. Yhtenä syynä kirjallisuuden vähäiselle hyödyntämiselle on varmaan ollut oppimisen ja opettamisen haasteet, joita heterogeeniset oppilasryhmät tarjoavat. Uusi opetussuunnitelma velvoittaa ottamaan huomioon erilaiset …

Comprehension of Generalized Conversational Implicatures by Children With and Without Autism Spectrum Disorder

2018

This study evaluates the comprehension of generalized conversational implicatures (GCI) in children with and without autism spectrum disorder (ASD), using a GCI test constructed based on the Levinson model, which distinguishes between three types of implicatures: type Q (or scalar: “what is not referred to does not occur”); type I (“by default, it is not necessary to say what can be assumed”); and type M (“if someone is expressing something in a not very simple or marked way, it is because s/he is describing a situation that is not very typical, frequent, or prototypical”). In addition to the ASD group (n = 22), two comparison groups were utilized: a group matched on chronological age with …

The Effect of an enriched sport program on children's executive functions: the ESA program

2020

Purpose: The effects of physical exercise on executive functions (EFs) are well documented. EFs are involved in daily activities, and their development determines the quality of people’s future life, both in terms of mental health and quality of life. The purpose of the current paper is to evaluate the effects of a physical education program, elaborated within the Enriched Sports Activity Program (ESA Program), an Erasmus + Project, on EFs, namely, visuospatial working memory, inhibitory control, cognitive flexibility, and task switching. Method: Data were collected on November 2017 (t1) and May 2018 (t2). At t1, a sample of 357 children from four European countries (Italy, Germany, Lithuan…

The Influence of an Enriched Sport Program on Children’s Sport Motivation in the School Context: The ESA PROGRAM

2020

Purpose: Besides the evident positive effect on body development, physical activity has proven to boost executive functions, especially if the exercises are enriched with cognitive stimuli. Previous studies have shown that introducing challenging exercises in the physical activity routine can also enhance motivation. Therefore, enriching a physical education program with cognitively challenging exercises may also foster children’s motivation during physical education classes, where the motivation is high at the beginning of the school year and low at the end of it. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to test if a sport program enriched by cognitive stimuli may improve kids’ motivation o…

Sosiaalisen solidaarisuuden käänne vammaisten lasten tutkimuksessa

2019

Artikkelissa luomme katsauksen vammaisten lasten tutkimuksessa tapahtuneisiin tutkimusparadigman muutoksiin.

The care pathway for children with urticaria, angioedema, mastocytosis

2015

Cutaneous involvement characterized by urticarial lesions with or without angioedema and itch is commonly observed in routine medical practice. The clinical approach may still remain complex in real life, because several diseases may display similar cutaneous manifestations. Urticaria is a common disease, characterized by the sudden appearance of wheals, with/without angioedema. The term Chronic Urticaria (CU) encompasses a group of conditions with different underlying causes and different mechanisms, but sharing the clinical picture of recurring wheals and/or angioedema for at least 6 weeks. Hereditary Angioedema (HAE) is a rare disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of non-pruritic,…

L'adquisició infantil de les llengües de signes

2003

[ENG] This article offers an overview of research in sign language acquisition by children, mostly in American Sign Language. The results indicate that the developmental milestones and the linguistic errors made by children acquiring a sign language coincide with those observed in hearing children acquiring spoken languages. The visual-gestural modality is shown not to have the expected impact on the acquisition processes, which is arguably regulated by strictly linguistic principles.
