Distributed feedback lasing in cellulose films

2013

Cellulose derivatives, because of their molecular structure and chirality, can self-assemble to form spatially periodic cholesteric liquid crystal phases. We have synthesized and produced solid cross-linked cholesteric cellulose based films optimized to provide high reflectivity. Since these films are self-assembled photonic bandgap materials, they may be expected to show distributed feedback lasing. By doping samples with fluorescent dyes and optically pumping thin films of these materials, we were able to demonstrate, to the best of our knowledge, for the first time, mirrorless band-edge lasing in cellulose derivatives.

Multimodal nonlinear imaging of suspended carbon nanotubes using circular polarizations

2013

In this work, multimodal nonlinear microscopy of suspended CNTs using circular polarizations (CP) was reported. Significant variations in the SHG and THG signals of the CNTs between left hand circular polarization (LHCP) and right hand circular polarization (RHCP) were observed. The variations in the nonlinear signals can be associated to the unique properties of the CNTs such as chirality.

Background-Free Second-Harmonic Generation Microscopy of Individual Carbon Nanotubes

2015

We use polarized second-harmonic generation (SHG) microscopy to investigate pristine air-suspended carbon nanotubes (CNT). We show that SHG originates from CNT chirality, allowing also different response for the two circular polarizations of fundamental light.

Tertiary Chiral Nanostructures from C‐H∙∙∙F Directed Assembly of Chiroptical Superatoms

2021

Chiral hierarchical structures are universal in nature, whereas quite challenging to mimic in man-made synthesis. We report herein the synthesis and structure of tertiary chiral nanostructures with 100% optical purity. A novel synthetic strategy, using chiral reducing agent, R and S -BINAPCuBH 4 (BINAP is 2,2'-Bis(diphenylphosphino)-1,1'-binaphthyl), is developed to access to atomically precise, intrinsically chiral [Au 7 Ag 6 Cu 2 ( R - or S -BINAP) 3 (SCH 2 Ph) 6 ]SbF 6 nanoclusters in one-pot synthesis. The clusters represent the first tri-metallic superatoms with inherent chirality and fair stability. Both metal distribution (primary) and ligand arrangement (secondary) of the enantiomer…

Isospin 0 and 1 resonances from pi Sigma photoproduction data

2013

Recently we presented a successful strategy to extract the position of the two Lambda ( 1405) poles from experimental photoproduction data on the gamma p -> K+pi(0)Sigma(0) reaction at Jefferson Lab. Following a similar strategy, we extend the previous method to incorporate also the isospin 1 component which allows us to consider in addition the experimental data on gamma p -> K+pi(+/-)Sigma(-/+). The idea is based on considering a production mechanism as model independent as possible and implementing the final state interaction of the final meson-baryon pair based on small modifications of the unitary chiral perturbation theory amplitudes. Good fits to the data are obtained with this proce…

(K)over-bar N N absorption within the framework of the fixed-center approximation to Faddeev equations

2013

We present a method to evaluate the (K) over bar absorption width in the bound (K) over bar N N system. Most calculations of this system ignore this channel and only consider the (K) over bar N -> pi Sigma conversion. Other works make a qualitative calculation using perturbative methods. Since the (1405) resonance is playing a role in the process, the same resonance is changed by the presence of the absorption channels andwe find that a full nonperturbative calculation is called for, which we present here. We employ the fixed center approximation to Faddeev equations to account for (K) over bar rescattering on the (NN) cluster and we find that the width of the states found previously for S …

2017

Abstract Five new organotin(IV) complexes of compositions [Me 2 SnL 1 ] ( 1 ), [Me 2 SnL 2 ] n ( 2 ), [Me 2 SnL 3 ] ( 3 ), [Ph 3 SnL 1 H] n ( 4 ) and [Ph 3 SnL 3 H] ( 5 ) (where L 1  = (2 S )-2-(( E )-(( Z )-4-hydroxypent-3-en-2-ylidene)amino)-3-(1 H -indol-3-yl)propanoate, L 2  = (2 S )-( E )-2-((2-hydroxybenzylidene)amino)-3-(1 H -indol-3-yl)propanoate and L 3  = (2 S )-( E )-2-((1-(2-hydroxyphenyl)ethylidene)amino)-3-(1 H -indol-3-yl)propanoate were synthesized and spectroscopically characterized. The crystal structures of 1 – 4 were determined. For the dimethyltin derivative 2 , a polymeric chain structure was observed as a result of a long Sn∙∙∙O contact involving the exocyclic carbony…

Triggering dissymmetry in achiral dye molecules by chiral solvents: Circular dichroism experiments and DFT calculations

2011

The electronic circular dichroism spectra of achiral product “Lumogen F Red” (ROT-300) in four different chiral solvents are recorded at different temperatures. DFT calculations allow to identify two enantiomeric conformers for ROT-300. In vacuo they are equally populated; in chiral solvents one enantiomer prevails. Thermodynamic quantities involved in the chiral preference are derived. Chirality, 2011. © 2011 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Simple chiral urea gelators, (R)- and (S)-2-heptylurea: their gelling ability enhanced by chirality.

2011

Abstract We present the first report on the synthesis of chiral ureas, ( R )- and ( S )-2-heptylurea, and their gelling behaviors. The ureas were prepared by the reactions of chiral amines and phenyl carbamate in the presence of triethylamine. On cooling from homogeneous solutions, the chiral ureas form gels in water and various nonpolar organic solvents, such as cyclohexane, toluene, and tetrachloromethane, while the racemate gelatinize only toluene and tetrachloromethane among the solvents we examined. The gelling ability of the enantiomeric urea is higher than the racemate, as the critical gelling concentrations in toluene, for example, were 0.2% and 0.7% (wt/wt), respectively. The enhan…
