Abstract Macroinvertebrate communities from the lower Nysa Klodzka River catchment, southern Poland, were analyzed seasonally, in order to assess changes in their composition and structure, in relation to water quality. Two major groups of sites, differing in both morphological structure and taxonomical composition by cluster analysis, were identified within the catchment area. Wider and deeper sites, located along the Nysa Klodzka River, were associated with the dominance of Chironomidae. Inferring fish abundance in lakes from subfossil midge (Diptera:Chironomidae) remains

This study assessed the possibility of using subfossil remains of chironomid head capsules to reconstruct past fish abundances in lakes. Using data from 20 Swedish lakes, a weighted average (WA) model was created to predict the abundance of benthivorous fish (cyprinids and perch). Chironomid head capsules, identified to genus, served as the predictors to model already recorded (catch per unit effort) fish data. Toxicity of fullerene (C60) to sediment-dwelling invertebrate Chironomus riparius larvae

An environmentally realistic method to test fullerene (C(60) ) toxicity to the benthic organism Chironomus riparius was created by allowing suspended fullerenes to settle down, making a layer on top of the sediment. To test the hypothesis that higher food concentrations will reduce toxic responses, two food concentrations were tested (0.5 and 0.8% Urtica sp.) in sediment containing fullerene masses of 0.36 to 0.55 mg/cm(2) using a 10-d chronic test. In the 0.5% food level treatments, there were significant differences in all growth-related endpoints compared with controls. Fewer effects were observed for the higher food treatment. An electrospray ionization mass spectrometric study of the extracellular hemoglobins from Chironomus thummi thummi.

The aquatic larvae of the dipteran, Chironomus thummi thummi contain extracellular hemoglobins which exhibit stage-specific expression. We have used maximum entropy-based deconvolution of the complex, multiply charged electrospray ionization mass spectra, to demonstrate the presence of more than 20 components, ranging in mass from 14,417.3 Da to 17,356.5 Da in the 4th instar larvae. Of the 15 major peaks with intensities > 10 relative to 100 for the 14,417.3 Da-component (CTT-IV), only the 15,528.2-Da peak does not correspond to a known amino acid sequence. A key component of understanding the potential environmental risks of fullerenes (C60) is their potential effects on benthic invertebrates. Using the sediment dwelling invertebrate Chironomus riparius we explored the effects of acute (12 h and 24 h) and chronic (10 d, 15 d, and 28 d) exposures of sediment associated fullerenes. Sequence and evolution of the gene for the monomeric globin I and its linkage to genes coding for dimeric globins in the insect Chironomus thummi.

We isolated genomic clones containing sequences encoding globins I and IA from a Chironomus thummi thummi genomic library. Three clones contain globin IA (ctt-1A) genes, while one contains a globin I (ctt-1) gene. The coding regions of the four genes are identical except for the single base substitution accounting for the globin I/IA polymorphism. The noncoding DNA flanking the coding region is more than 98% similar, confirming a previous hypothesis that the globin ctt-1 and ctt-1A genes are alleles. Hemoglobins I and IA are monomeric in the insect hemolymph. Earlier in situ hybridization studies suggested that monomeric and dimeric globin genes are clustered at different chromosomal loci. …

Characterization of two globin genes from the malaria mosquito Anopheles gambiae: Divergent origin of nematoceran haemoglobins

The chironomid midges are the only insects that harbour true haemoglobin in their haemolymph. Here we report the identification of haemoglobin genes in two other nematoceran species. Two paralogous haemoglobin genes (glob1 and glob2) from the malaria mosquito Anopheles gambiae were cloned and sequenced. Furthermore, we identified two orthologous haemoglobin genes in the yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti. All four haemoglobins were predicted to be intracellular proteins, with the amino acids required for heme- and oxygen-binding being conserved. The intron positions found in globin genes of plants, protozoa and invertebrates have been interpreted as evidence for a three-intron-four-exon structure of the ancestral globin gene. Divergent Evolution of an "Orphon" Historic Gene Cluster in Chironomus

The histone genes of the midge Chironomus thummi thummi are organized in tandemly repeated gene groups, each containing the four core histone genes plus an H1 gene. These repetitive gene groups are found at five different loci, linked on one chromosomal arm. In addition to the clustered gene groups an isolated histone gene group exists which is found spatially separated on a different chromosome ("orphon" gene group). These orphon genes have been cloned and analysed in detail.
